Well I'm almost finished changing my interior to black only thing left is the package tray small trim pieces. Ran out of paint!! of course new carpet is coming, as well as having the seats done here in Tucson.

Nice work, that Grant Mahogany steering wheel looks good against the black dash. Did you need an install kit from Grant to mount it to the steering column?

gotta love black interior.I hve to get my seats done as I have bench but have some set of explorer buckets and gonna get them custom upolstered in cloth and the rear to match. my interior is already black and got a good used uncracked dashpad that as dyed black but nice but i'm converting mine to Sport doo panels and also making the formal roof into a Sportroof thanks to Andy's rotted out 73 GTS that i'm buying so then I'll have to dye the Sport panels black and get a  black headliner and carpet.
 
 Nice job on yours can't ait to see it finished

That glove box door is a pain in the A$$. My other one fit the same way. I thought was because one of the mounting tabs was broke, not so I guess I will keep trying to get it right.  Thanks For the compliments Guys!!      Wink

Which grant kit did you use? I used the 'standard' kit, and I fond the wheel was FAR too close to the dash and steering wheel for my liking.

I used SEM interior vinyl and plastic paint and dye bought all of it from Eastwood products used about 5 cans of color also have to use vinyl prep and adhesion promoter. several light coats works the best.

has anyone ever redone the silver/gray trim on dash like around the bezel,  and lettering next to the headlight, washer control knobs?
Like some sort of small painting wheel to touch it up nice...??..

 I used tru test, or testors silver paint and and artist brush blended right in. Has anyone pulled out the lower dash ? I was going to attempt it this winter , any tricks , troubles ?  Does the wheel have to come off?  is it glove box and all?

I really didn't pull my dash to paint it, I removed everything that attaches to it though, masked off all areas that didn't need paint, and you can see the end result. It has been awhile since I replaced a dash asy, but as I recall there was 4 bolts and either end and  a few braces to keep all that plastic from moving around. I had the steering column out both times .

When I re-did my instrument cluster surround I used the Testors silver paint with a sponge brush and it worked just fine. I just dabbed a few times and kept a towel w/ paint thinner nearby to wipe off any mistakes and now it looks good as new. Thanks for the dash removal tip. All the rest of my panels are now blue, but that dash is a lil intimidating still. Shocked

Speaking of Dashes...My dash lights are pretty dim. Anyone ever fix that with LEDS or anything? Also no light in radio, is there a bulb that can be replaced there?

I pulled mine just before the Thanksgiving holiday. Since I have to keep my car driveable, I needed to leave the harness intact so I can move the car around the dealership if needed so I might have had to do a bit more that someone who can just unplug the harness from the bulkhead connector??

 

There is a bolt and a nut on each end of the dash panel that must be removed (I left them barely engaged so the weight of the dash would be supported until I had everything out of the way and was ready to remove the dash from the car) as well as a couple sheet metal brackets and a heavy brace just to the right (passenger side) of the dash center.

 

I had already removed the dash pad, cluster, glove box & door, HAVC vents, etc so I was that far ahead of the game. Before I started loosening up the mounting hardware, I first removed the HVAC and other electrical controls and the ash tray assembly and pushed/pulled them free of the dash. Again, since I was leaving the harness in the car, there were a few harness hangers that needed to be opened up and the harness freed from. I replaced any hardware that may have been removed to prevent them from getting lost and reminding me where everything went during reassembly.

 

There are also a couple semi-rigid rubber/plastic harness protector/hangers on the drivers side where the harness goes around the column and then divides for the cluster and  the rest of the dash run. The longer piece just below the HVAC control is held on by three screws and the smaller piece below the wiper controls is held on by two screws all of which are threaded into the sheet metal dash reinforcement.

 

I discovered three cracks in my dash that I needed to protect and keep from making worse. (You can just make them out in the attached pictures) One was across the thin section below the glove box door, another just below the ash tray and the last was just starting below the HVAC controls. There is a sheet metal reinforcement that runs along the bottom of the dash panel. To maintain the structural integrity of the plastic piece, any hardware that was removed that went thru the plastic and threaded into the metal bracket was replaced. This particularly included the glove box door hinge hardware to prevent any further damage to that end of the panel.

 

With everything removed and the dash panel ready for removal, I pulled the steering wheel and then removed the four fasteners at each end of the dash. With those out, it was a simple matter of pulling the panel forward and removing it from the car. With the panel out of the car, I replaced the hardware at the ends of the dash, the steering wheel and tied the harness up out of the way. With a little patience you should be able to remove your dash without damage and if you are pulling the harness out with the panel, it may be a bit simpler and quicker that my endeavor…??

These dashes ALL have those cracks, I think.
 
Uante, I got a full LED kit from Bill at Hipo_parts on ebay.. I should really do a write up with some pictures, they are a 5 way LED and look %&*#! great!
 
Joe, I personally didn't repair the crack under the glove box, as the glove box door hinge reinforces it.

OK thats what I wanted to see and read, It is all one piece .I've got a cadaver car that already has the upper dash and wheel out , All I need is a couple of warm days  in January and I will get it out. thanks much

How many cans did it take to do just the lower dash?
