Hello forum. I took the water pump of the 351c engine today. There was no backing plate…is this normal? The pump had just a gasket and then sat on the engine timing cover plate.
I forgot my phone, so I couldnt snap a photo..will do tomorrow.
Thanks… |

I guess there is none….just the timing cover. I have cleaned the pump and plate up nicely. The pump is still the original Ford. 71 dated. No play in the bearing. Still good!

Sounds right. It threw me a bit too since most of my experience was with small chevys. That’s cool about your water pump! 👍

Replace the WP, but save the old one. The seals are the weakest links in the WP if the bearings survive, and somewhere those can be changed. Just as a core I think they are somewhat valuable. I bought a reverse rotation WP to attempt to make up a serpentine belt system. I haven't begun to hunt the WP pulley that it will take to match a later crank pulley etc.

Yes…you may be right. I will look into it. I will definitely save the old original pump. I didnt have any leaks with that pump mounted.
🤠👍

I agree, don't use the original. Mine was also original, I saved it, but upgraded to a flow cooler aluminum pump. Painted it Ford blue and looks close enough to stock that no one notices.

FYI avoid anything from AT Racing World, SpeedMaster and ProComp!
anything with a part number beginning with PCE, like this https://www.ebay.de/itm/291747779594?hash=item43ed85d40a:g:O4IAAOSwgO5i-Ypn&amdata=enc%3AAQAHAAAA4Nh%2B%2BfVF5SQXknvkrow8vkrUGY%2FufeENlTgwAhc78RNOfRSYM3snnwzv9qDOYMrtiZDYXA0dnkutcjh2PgZzbVs3Fs5dQ60jCOf5qKQGiDUYdChdI8Y5hJTEhwx8FVhv6YhfOHEIbjKb2uZ9K9Md%2Bm%2Fc9Apl9t4KT2lex3r%2F3aF5Lv9pDe21kskYcg%2BiLXufUCjEbIlrr3j2cejbOa5iMSWqJJ1brS1G%2FCN0mXT0ziBqVAQd9XoR%2FvtCA%2BIbGj2OdHQU4e1YQ3UpVbgGVl2QK4Po3SclWwX5pa%2FmJuGKs8ja%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR_7X2frYYA if it ever works at all, it won't work for long. junk IIRC Bosch makes water pumps but IDK if you can get them there? is Gewerblich a good company / product? |

That GMB is a fairly decent brand I think. The real problem is now there are easily 20 bands for most parts, whereas 35 years ago there were maybe six or less. It used to be easy for most people to figure out which were good parts, and which were likely junk. Now most brands fall into the lower quality category. Dorman is huge now, but they have been a lower level for so long that the sales have grown them world wide into one of the most popular brands. You have to be careful with all brands, and certain parts should only be used from the OEM, or a rare other high end brand. Many electronics parts fall into that category, and one I learned 30 years ago, the starter relay on the fender. Don't buy any off brand version of those ever.
