What is an R code engine, inline 6? N, Q, S, and H were 72 and up.

I know most Ford fans probably already know this- The R-code was reserved to Mustangs 68-72, Cougars 68-70, Torinos and Cyclones 68-70. The 68-70 R-codes were the 428CJ-RamAir, The 71 R-code Mustang was the Boss 351, and the last gasp for the R-code was the 72 351HO, which was a slightly detuned Boss 351.. It was not a separate model like the Boss 351- the 72 R-code engine was available in any body style.. The 69-70 Q-codes were non-ram air 428CJ cars. From late 71-74(I think)- the lower compression Q-code 351CJ replaced the M-code 351-4V Cleveland, which appeared in 1970 Mustangs, Cougars, Torinos, and Montego/Cyclones.

That would nice, and super rare. The 351HO was a 1972 engine only, and it had adjustable rockers, so the pedestals were cut down just like the Boss 351 heads. The main changes were the compression and cam, the heads were the key assemblies though. Any closed chamber Cleveland is a big advantage for building power, much easier to get the compression up.

Check the special dipstick, the R code 351 engines take six quarts but use the identical oil pan as all Cleveland's(not the double sump truck).

No R-Code Torinos ever, but there were Mustangs. There were 398 R-Code engines built in 1972, so even more rare than a '71 R-Code Boss 351. To reduce the emissions in 1972, Ford lowered the compression to an advertised
9.2:1 (9.0:1 measured). This was accomplished by switching to open
chamber combustion chambers and flattop pistons. The camshaft was
revised to have less duration, 275/275 degrees, but compensated with
slightly higher lift of 0.491”/0.491”. It continued to use the same
carburetor and intake, but the carburetor was recalibrated for cleaner
emissions. |
