I recently was at a local car gathering and a man approached me and asked if I would be interested in a dealer installed air conditioning unit off a 1972 Torino. He stated his dad had ordered the car and when it came in it didn't have air so the dealer installed a Ford full width under dash unit. He had bought the car from his dad and had later sold it to friend of his with the understanding he would keep the a/c unit. It's been sitting in the rafters in his garage since the early 80's. I met him at his house and apart from it being very dusty appeared in good shape. I gave him $50 for it and brought it home. Just wondering if anyone is familiar with these units.

1972 Gran Torino station wagon, light blue, 351C 2V, prior owner upgraded to 4V (2V heads), originally had a C4 but prior owner changed to C6 for some reason.

Just throwing this back out there to see if anyone is familiar/has knowledge of this. I might be pursuing reconditioning this for my car and any info would be appreciated.

Although not familar with this unit itself; i have restored a couple of ford units for 68-69 fairlanes. This probably isn't much different except for layout.
You're going to need the condenser, all new hoses. Figure out how they routed the hoses, and of course get the appropriate drier/receiver. The TEV may need replace as well. These aren't complicated; its a pump and a place to shed heat (condenser) and a place to gain heat (evaporator). Personally, I'd have the Evaporator checked first as you probably wont find a replacement, then proceed from there.

Very cool find Dave. I have never messed with one before, but I remember Dad talking about them back in the day when AC was the most expensive option on a car. It seems that Peter has experience with these, but my concern would be finding parts that will work with this system. Maybe you could use a vintage air universal kit and retrofit it to work with you under the dash unit? Then you would at least have updated hardware.

Vince, I'm going to be cleaning it up and probably contact Vintage Air to see if that would work, if I do add air would probably like something that was available when the car was new.

That's for sure. The repro window sticker I have for my '69 shows that AC was $380.41. The base price was $2865.00. It added 13%+ just for the AC! Heck, bucket seats + console + FMX were cheaper. No wonder it's a relatively obscure option on these older cars. Just for grins, I did the total price ($4,147.56) in 2023 dollars and it converts to $35,068.91. AC converts to $3,216.48!  |
