Hello all, I have finally had a chance to tinker with my new to me 71 Torino GT, 351c C4 trans. The previous owner told me that when himself and his brother towed it home, they pulled the driveshaft causing the transmission to lose some fluid. Today, once the car was running at temp, the dipstick sure enough had no fluid on it, I had to add 3 quarts before it read full. I let the car run in idle for a little while, before starting to go through the gears. In reverse, the transmission kick down does work ( I have a noticeable rpm change) and the car does drive backwards. But all three forward gears, act like neutral. RPMs stay the same as Park, and once one time while trying for nearly 25 minutes did the car attempt to move forward, and it only moved maybe two inches forward. I did notice while giving it some gas in drive, a faint burning smell, but I wasn’t sure if it was the terrible exhaust leaks or something else, and as soon as I smelt it I quit giving the car gas in gear.
I haven’t never worked on a transmission a day in my life, so I do not know where to even begin.

hmm sounds like the bands are out of adjustment?good thing about the c4 is the adjustments are made from the outside... worth trying first, but could be its due to be rebuilt

Yeah, do the band adjustments and hope. The low fluid may be from the shaft being out, but it could be from earlier and running it that low would hurt the pump. Try the bands first and double check the fluid level carefully.
