Hey guys,

Was able to borrow a rotisserie from a friend and upon delivery I noticed it's a basic model without all the various attachments to allow for a variety of mounting options. Haven't gotten a chance to look at it or the Torino very closely to really determine the optimum mounting location but here's what I have been able to deduce so far;

I will be mounting the body shell AND frame to the rotisserie as an assembly. Everything is off the body, inside and out, so it is just the shell but the front and rear suspension WILL still be on the frame (the rest of the driveline is removed). My body mounts are in really good shape so I'm going to leave them alone so I won't have THAT battle to fight.

I will need to fabricate some kind of bracketry to tie the rotisserie to the car and it looks like the simplest solution would be to make a channel to span between the frame bumper attachements front and rear. I know they were designed to slide in and out of the frame receivers upon an impact, but my question is are they stout enough to handle the weight and rotational forces imposed on them by rolling the car over?

Anyone with experience mounting their car to a rotisserie in this manner? Any pics of '74-'76's mounted on a "body spit"? Will my idea fly or am I asking for trouble?

ANY AND ALL SUGGESTIONS AND COMMENTS WELCOME!!!

Thanks all.....

Instead of going to each bumper support, I'd remove them and go to the frame rails at the support mounting points.

Those supports are just heavy rubber stuffed and melted into the brace with the bumper bracket sticking out. I know bumper jacks go by them etc etc.. but if it were my car, I'd spend the extra time with some angle iron. Especially with rolling it around and rotating the body.

With a project as extensive as having everything removed from the shell I'd opt to sperate the body/frame.if the mounts are that good shape there shouldn't be any battle.I think you'd be better off in the long run for better access for better resto.IMO

I would not flip the car upside down by the frame.

If those body mounts are at all suspect... would be terrible to see the body fall off the frame while it is upside down!!

For the small amount of work left to seperate the frame and body... WELL WORTH IT!

OK then, a few questions;

1. Were replacement body mounts ever SUCCESSFULLY found without a lot of modifications to work? I've read the post SEVERAL times and it seems like there was never a concensus on the ultimate bushings... Did I miss something??

2. What would the SHELL only weigh? How many helpers will I need to lift from the chassis?

3. Need to do some sheetmetal repair... should I take care of all the repairs PRIOR to seperating the frame and body?

Sorry for sounding so ignorant but this is my VERY FIRST restoration project, learning the various diciplines as I go and it's been a one man show thus far. Because of all this, I'm trying to be VERY CAREFUL and have everything planned out BEFORE HAND!

Thanks for any and all tips on how to proceed!!

yes there is a whole thread about body bushings in the 72-76 section that has a sticky so it is always near the top of the 1st page there are afew ways to go with the radiator support bushings which are different then the body mounts

Going that far you should sepperate and tear down the frame and paint it and clean up the under body after mounting it to the rotisserie

the body mounts...  i used the suggested mounts from the thread jeff refered to.  2008 ford crown vic.  you just have to cut off 1/4 of an inch off the metal insert.  they fit like a glove.  (i have some pics in my project thread)  i put a metal cutting blade on my table saw, fabbed a holder for the metal piece and ran them through.  took 30 minutes from start to finish.  you have to round off where you cut so it doesnt dig into the rubber upon installation...
i dont know how much the shell weighs... but i would suggest as many as possible.  that thing is heavy.  i pulled it up with straps mounted in my rafters.  of course, i was alone, (i dont have any friends apparently)

your sheet metal, i wish that i had done my sheet metal repair before i remounted the body to the frame.  when the body was hanging in my shop.  would have been sooooo much easier than what i am dealing with now.  there may be a reason not to... jeff may know better than me.

hope this helps

I'd use a cherry picker mounted to the inner seat belt bolt receiver holes and the rear outboard seat belt receiver holes and some chain.. and a few people to help guide it. let the lift do all the work.

Two strong guys, one at each end to lift either chassis or body, Although my chassis had no discs on it -

Holy Cow! Hanging a body from those pre-fab rafters? If that can be done safely, that is nice!

Knowing my luck, I will probably end up using the chains and inside mounting points like Paul described. Cherry picker that shell up and out of the way.

Smile  lol

Surprisingly it worked really well, just go for the larger straps.

You will be surprised how light it is, assuming you have gutted the whole thing.

Glad you didn't get underneath Stacy Lynn while she was hanging, otherwise...you'd be Malcolm in The Middle.

Even though the area around the body mounts may look OK, there can be rust hidden between the mount and the frame. This was probably bare metal when the car was built around 40 years ago so it's had lots of time to rust, especially if it was driven a winter or three since it was new. Road salt can seep in between the frame and mount and slowly turn that area to dust. Even if you're right and there is no damage, at least you'll be 100% sure.
