Hi Guys
Finally started the conversion from auto column car to stick. Running into a few issues I thought I would see if anyone might have run into.
1. Z bar where it mounts to frame. There were two holes in frame but no threads or any way to attach z bar. Bought some what I was told were called riv nuts. They are 5 sided inch long aluminum nuts. They fit in holes but are not tight. Called place I bought them from and now they tell me I need a special tool to install the nut in the frame. I dont have much faith in what they are telling me.
2. Clutch rod thru firewall location and size hole? Found a circle in firewall with a dimple in middle. I'm assuming that is where the hole was drilled for a stick car. If so does anyone know the size of the hole? Is there a boot available for it?
3. Was there a lower boot for shifter? Anything go between top of tunnel hump and console hump?
4. Is the hole that was torched in tunnel hump the same size and location for auto and manual? I believe it would be but just checking.
5. Back up switch on back of trans. Wear does the wire for the switch get routed? Does it go through torched hole and where does it get connected to?
6.Car did not come with gauge package. I have a 72 Gauge cluster. Since I am changing pedals and steering column it would make sense to do gauges at the same time. I have heard its a nightmare to do. Also heard its plug and play. Anyone actually do it that knows? I could wait to tackle but I would hate to take everything apart again. I was told to do the column switch the gauges all have to come out anyhow.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks Steve

you're correct on most all of that! you can crimp the riv nuts without the tool using a long bolt that threads into it with another nut and washer to thread downward to crimp the insert when it's in the hole, holding the bolt head and threading the nut down to crimp it, once its crimped tight back the nut off and unscrew the whole bolt assemblyWink

i have this tool but it's over $100

besides the threads in the frame  / Riv-Nut you need about a 3/8" tall spacer for the Z bar bracket to sit on. at least that's the way my 72 Q code donor car was set up, the Riv-Nut was thick and made up the spacer. i decided to just use a bolt up from the inside of the frame and a jam nut to replicate the spacer height for a much stronger anchor than an aftermarket riv-Nut deal. NO it wasn't easy snaking the bolts up in there on a universal and socket on a long extension but worth it IMO. here's my hardware selection as it's stacked out, IIRC the bolts are 7/16" and fit the holes in the frame very nicely

to save time & answer a bunch of you questions all at once,

i ended up not doing the header bolts welded in place and went with the bolts like a explained above. the link in my thread is NFG but here's another.
OEM concourse correct or not IDK but if you punch the hole the right size this boot will work

Thanks. We were talking about doing this. Welding washers to nuts and attaching to a welding rod to get them up through hole in frame. This is great info. Thanks

You need the cluster harness from a floor shift car.

Is the cluster the same for both, is the harness just a little different?

I had swapped a sport gauge cluster into my original 72 Gran Torino, and it was a floor shift. That worked plug and play for what likely came from a 72 or 73(I don't know). I swapped that dash and cluster into my 73 Ranchero which was column shift, I didn't get it installed, left it out to do other things. That should work when I get it back together.

My other truck is also a column shift, but with the Sport cluster in it stock. The wiring harness to the cluster is what you mean is different right?

I bought a rally Guage cliuster and sent it out to Dakota Digital to have it overhauled and all electronics updated while keeping the original look. So I have that covered. My car was a column shift auto. I converted it to a stick. I need the harness from the dash to the console for the console lights

The reverse light switch is wired into the engine harness at the firewall near the wiper motor if memory serves me correctly. It is a different setup than column shift. Vince asked me to take some pics as he is sthinking of going down the conversion rabbit hole too.  I had a bunch of pics at one point but deleted as much of that portion of my memory as I could. I would send @Lynchster a messageas his car is super clean and a factory stick car. He would have much better pictures than the beater out in my yard.
I will get as many pics as I feel up to when I get the chance but have a lot on my plate at the moment.
