    Posted: 23-April-2009 at 1:24PM

I am just about ready to drop in the 5.0/ AOD i've put together for my 73 Gran Torino.  I planned on using headers and it looks as if clearance will be quite tight on the drivers side. Am i going to have to have the headers in place as i drop the motor in? Any of you have any brand/ configuration sugestions and short cuts? Any advice is most appreciated.

standard full length  headers will be very tight/touching an AOD trans. they are wide. you should look for a shorty header

Hedman headers are the way to go.On my 76 351W/AOD,they fit perfectly. The passenger side can fit in from underneath if you have the car in the air high enoughThe drivers side may fit in from underneath.Using an engine hoist,if the motor is slightly raised, you can get the left one in from underneath also. The 302 is slightly narrower and shorter in height than a 351W,so it will make it a little easier.302 and 351 carry different part numbers due to the larger size of the windsor.I'd just install them as you put the engine in,much easier.

But with the 302 being narrower and shorter than the 351 would the possibility of the headers contacting the bellhousing on an AOD fitted to the 302 be a possibility. I'm asking because I'm almost there with my 79 Ranchero - swaping from a 351M with an FMX.

I did some digging around and found a set of shorty Hedman's that might do the trick. Part number 88400.

I could take a look at my headers and get an idea if there would be enough clearance for the narrower 302.Possibly a 5.0 mustang header would work,The difference I noticed from my torino hedmans versus a 5.0 stang header is in the collector area. The mustang headers come out much straighter undernaeth than my torino ones, which kinda angle in to the center of the car and are very close to the pan rail area of the trans.
