Dived into my dash today to try to get my tachometer working. Pulling the dash apart was pretty straightforward however removing the speedo cable is not.

How do you disconnect it from the speedo head? There is a white connector of some kind and I can't figure how it comes apart. Do I need a special tool?

Everything works except the tach, brake light, and the clock. The tach would be nice to get working again...and the brake light. The tach wiring to the firewall under the hood seems to work (test light goes on). Behind the gauge, I can't test anything with out releasing the speedo.

Is the tach and the brake light on the same fuse breaker in the panel? There is a small 4 Amp fuse I think is out...no power to the e-brake switch.

Any suggestions?

The speedo cable comes off after you squeeze that white connection lock. It takes a good firm squeeze to get it to let go of the edge of the cable fitting end. You have to do it by feel as I recall, I haven't done that since about 1988.

All I do is "squeeze" the flat part of the white connector?? Thanks!

Question: Can I use a pair of needle nose pliers to squeeze it? Or is that not recommended.

Once I get the cluster out, how do I test the tach itself to see if it works?

Got my tach working. Would you believe it was the fuse? I picked up all the Ford shop manuals as my BRAKE light was out. Found the fuse for that and popped in a new one. BRAKE light works and tach needle moved. It works. Saves me from pulling the cluster to check wiring.

Bonus! :)
