Hi forum. I need to remove my distributor. I have tried everything. I need some ideas. It is really stuck in there. I have used PB blaster, beaten on it, etc….it wont budge….I dont want to smash it either.
Thanks…

When the distributor is in the front, they can be difficult to remove. You need to soak the base with lots of penetrating oil and just let it soak for a couple of days and give the vaccum canister a couple of wacks in both directions to try and free it. You might have to repeat the process a few times but it will eventually come free. Oil, time, patience and a bit of gentle persuasion with a hammer is about all you can do.

Try Kroil as a penetrant, it's about the best there is.

Snap it and the ballgame starts over with bases loaded and you are down by five runs.

Mine was seized too and I tried all the tricks, nothing worked. I ended up pulling the hood, rigging up a slide hammer to a puller which gripped the housing. Using that setup, it got it out very easily and quickly.

I got the distributor out today.Pheww…nothing broken or inside engine. I will get a new distributor though. One of the screw holes for the advance was damaged.
The distributor was gunked up. The gear looks fine. Is it normal for 351c distributor to have a kinda hex drive for the oil pump shaft? |

Well done, great luck. That sounds all normal, they're rough after this age. The oil pump drive is a hexagon, replace with a nice ARP shaft if you can.

you could get away with swapping you guts into another housing if you can find one. while your into it you might want to look at what the advance curve is doing, remove the advance plate and see what timing slots you have, which slot it's keyed into

Is there any reason, I shouldnt just be able to pop in the new distributor??
I could clean the guts of the original…..and put them in a new housing….but, do I need to? If you have a housing..lemme know….will definitely try it👍🍻

probably best to source a complete unit correct for your application, 351C there are differences across the various engines |

Yes..of course. I was quite ‘scared’ to buy the wrong ‘butor exactly for the reasons and picture you posted.
Anyway…I think I got the ‘correct’ ‘butor for a 351c, single vacuum. New Cardone model bought at rockauto. It definitely looks like the original. Here is a picture. If you see anything that isnt correct…lemme know.. |

The timing slots on the original ‘butor are 18L.

18 and what is the other slot? the slot piece can be rotated 180* to use the opposite slot if that suits your needs better, or you can weld the slots shorter if sourcing alternate parts is tough as it is for you being way over there. don't forget when calculating your advance you need to double the number because distributor degrees is only 1/2 of crank degrees. your 18 slot will allow for a total mechanical timing advance of 36* by itself, there's no room left for any kind of decent base / initial timing. if you have a 10 slot that allows 20 * and you can set initial at 16* for a total of 36*. low initial timing makes a lazy sluggish dog of an engine, get up into the 12*-18* range and you'll love it. the trick of course is to not allow too much total advance ;) but yes that looks like a 351C distributor, now it's just fingers crossed that everybody on the other end didn't mix it up. you're sticking with points? |

What do you mean by the other slot? Both sides are 18L. Is there another slot that I have overlooked?
I will try with points first(just for giggles), but Pertronix will go in eventually. I was using Pertronix with the original ‘butor. I have ordered tons of stuff from rockauto. No FU’s…yet.🤠👍

and it appears the bushing is missing off the post so that will add some degrees of advance. a piece of heat shrink tubing or 2 on the post might replace the missing bushing and reset your slot travel closer to original. the post bushings are notorious for disappearing and can usually be found broken laying down inside the housing so the dizzy is assembled with the post in the 13 slot and you have 18 on the other side? 13 makes 26* of mechanical advance leaving room for possibly 10*-12* base / initial timing. it'll be interesting to see what the new dizzy comes with, hopefully not the same so you can have more options. the important thing is that you know what slot the dizzy is operating, that way you're not totally blind / in the dark as to how much initial timing you should be setting at for best all around performance and drivability. making personalized adjustments to specifically tailor the advance curve to your needs is icing on the cake

it's just a sleeve that fits on the sticking up post thing in the slot, pretty small, it might be stuck in some oil goo under the spinning parts in the bottom of the housing, or not. or is yours still intact? this pic shows it in place, the Anti-Bounce Limit Stop |

Great info. No sign of that small bushing though. Metal? Rubber?

i thought they were some kind of rubber but the pic shows what looks like metal the issue with the Anti-Bounce Limit Stop going missing is that it effectively adds allowable advance

I had another distributor from a 71 429cj dual points. This dizzy had the small bushing intact.
The weights are 10L and 15L. What is the best plan here? Should I remove the guts from the original (busted) dizzy and put them in a new housing. IE, keep the 13L/18L? |

um, sell it and retire? that piece is Big $ to somebody, either stick it in as is or have it framed & insured but seriously, 1973 dual point if in original factory condition is valuable & hard to find. it it's a parts collection it's still cool. i'd set the post in the 10 slot and see what it does, set base timing at 16* run the numbers on it, might be a parts counter / service replacement that found it's way to that 1971 429 ?
