I'm trying to decide on a gear ratio for an engine / trans swap in my "other project" a 79 ranchero. I have a 4.11 posi that I once had in the 72 for a short bit. The math works out to a 2.75 final which seems decent to me. Any thoughts?

Sounds like a good plan to me, especially if you're in the hilly half of the state.  Even 4.30s would net you a 2.88 final drive ratio with the AOD.

Please enlighten the neophyte(s) as to the "math" formula so that we might learn and grow.

An AOD overdrive ratio is .68,Times that by your gear ratio and that's your final gear ratio in od.You have been enlightened!

This is my favorite speed/rpm/tire size/axle ratio calculator.

http://www.angelfire.com/fl/procrastination/rear.html

I can figure the speed the car will travel given a set of parameters at whatever engine speed. And I can mess with different ratios and such to find out what would get me the right engine speed on the highways around here.

Perhaps this one is a bit easier to use. You don't have to know the diameter of your wheel in inches.

And here is another, which goes the other way round. It tells you, what RPM you'll have at certain speeds.

You can't just hit Enter when you're done.

You have to click the CALCULATE button or it just refreshes the screen.
