Has anybody put overdrive on their 460? I'm thinking about installing a Gear Venders unit behind my C6. Looking for mileage but still able to kick it out and tow an rv. Looked at the overdrive trans for the 460 but don't really like what I've come across. I'm wanting to tow a small matching camper to car shows.

Well you've got at least five options for overdrive on a big block.

One, you can get the Gear Vendors unit and spend upwards of $2000 on it.

Two, you can use an E4OD out of a 90s F250 or Econoline van and have to mess around with the electronics to get it work right. If you find a known good E4OD you can call up Baumann Controls and use their Baumannator TCS box for $400 to do all that. Other trouble is the E4OD is HUGE and might require tunnel mods and crossmember mods and all that.

Three, you can use an AOD. I know, I know, "but the bellhousing's different" so you change the bellhousing. Not so much CHANGE the AOD's bellhousing as put in an adapter plate. This will cost like $800-$900, like this one from PATC.

Four, you can use an AOD by actually cutting off and changing the bellhousing. Art Carr sells what is a JW Ultra Bell. It costs $325 and changes your AOD to a big block pattern. Part number is 92454-AOD and it's available from other vendors like Lentech for more money. The Art Carr one is the cheapest SFI approved bellhousing adapter for the AOD to fit a big block. But you do have to cut off and weld on the Ultra Bell.

Fifth option is to me the least desireable. It'll cost you about $900 to get this 429/460 to Chevy adapter and then you can run a 700R4. You'll need an electronics controller box to run the lockup at least. Baumann to the rescue, another $400 down the drain.

If I do not change my engine to a 302 or 351w, I will probably be using the Art Carr Ultra Bell if I can figure out how to have someone cut off an AOD bellhousing and put the Ultra Bell on it. It seems to be commonplace. But then again, other people have told me there are SOME AOD's out there with a bolt-on bellhousing. Good luck. I haven't seen one yet.

Would the money, time and trouble be worth it for the amount of fuel you would save? Say you spend $1000 (more or less) for the change to overdrive. I'm thinking you'd be lucky to gain 5 mpg with a 460. You'd have to save $1000 in fuel just to get to the break-even point. After that you would actually start to save money. Personally, I'd leave it alone and spend the $1000 on fuel. Just my 2 cents...

I am kicking around a GV for my Cougar.

For me it's not so much the fuel savings as it is the ability to cruise at 70 MPH @ 2K vs 3K.

I'd like to get a Gear Vendors for my C6 as well, I've been waiting for the price to drop under $2000 or catch a great deal on a used one. The GV looks like the best option especially if you've sunk a bunch of money into your C6 like I did.

hmm some thought as I was toying with the notion to put a AOD behind my 351 C that is going in the 73 GTS as I want a streetable car and with the HP increase the motor could use another gear for the highway. but maybe get a TCI C6 and then just buy a Gear Venders unit later

Just knowing the car is getting 18 to 20 miles a gallon instead of 13 to 15 would be good enough for me and my 351M. Then again, looking at the EPA ratings from back then, I'd be better off trying this with a 351W.

And so the cycle of "what engine should I put in my car so it burns less oil than gas" starts again.

David K has had a few troubles with his GV unit in his 588 powered S&H replica.. GV honored the warranty totally, but the time and effort to remove it 2 or 3 times wasn't compensated.  Never broke, just weird vibrations and such.

There is always the Greg Petit option with the built E4OD, but thats WAY over my head in terms of fabrication.
