Hi I'm going to put my rebuilt 400M back into my 72gts. But before that I wanted to sand and paint my engine bay.
But I don't know what to use. Hand sand or air sander. Hand sand looks like a lot of hard work and won't look as good. But air sander looks like it will be too ruff. Let me know what you have used? Edited by SocalTorino - 03-October-2011 at 12:57PM |

use a DA for the open spot and a wire brush for corners, you might want to smooth the heater core area as well as it's not really smooth from factory. If you have access to a sand blaster, it will make the job a lot easier.

An orbital sander would be prefered for open spaces. You can use scotch brite pads for hand sanding, they conform better than sandpaper.

When I stripped my firewall, I used a couple different things.
Standard Abrasives Britestrip discs/wheels mounted on a 4.5 inch electric grinder: I also used a small 2" abrasive disc in 80-120 grit in bad areas, like this: 3M sells a nice kit that is referred to as a NTN {no tools needed} kit for quick change of discs for different tasks. I like the britestrip discs because they do a good job of cleaning to bare steel without gouging the metal. Only thing is you need to watch sharp corners, or the BS material likes to grenade, and hurts a bit if hit just right. Here is a shot of my GTS 7-8 years back, I had the entire front off the car. Much easier to work on it with all the parts out of the way. I had to dig around, this was from 2003: Edited by Eliteman76 - 12-November-2011 at 7:52PM |
