Just wanted to warn u guys regarding using the FRAM oil filters. They are the lowest quality oil filters I have seen. The inside is just full of cardboard. I have used them for my ladies car (since she doesn't drive it to the breaking point like I do) yet if I would've known they were so bad I would never have used such thing.

I just used on my wife's car since she drives really patiently. Yet I saw what they were made of and changed it right away. I use wix or oreilly brand which I believe wix makes them and I verified it's quality. On my charger I use Mobil 1 since it actually keeps my oil cleaner for longer time than any other filter even k&n.

I've used Fram for 35 years. I thought they were good, I may be paying more attention and switching now.

As company's and parent company's get bought and sold, the products that we once knew as being the best or highly rated become cut rate and sub par due to corporate greed over taking pride in a product....it's the sad truth and as long as we keep giving them our hard earned disposable income ,they will keep producing sh*t.

The other filters on the shelf in my garage are Bosch Premiums. Anybody know anything about them?

Paper filtering element that degrades over time. Not as bad as JC Whitney's toilet paper insert filters, but closer than you'd like.
I run fresh Mobile 1 5W/30 oil and filters every 5,000 miles on my Titan, Civic and now the F150. They do well. However, I am switching to the Wix on those at next change. |

I get told that 5K intervals between synthetic changes is severe overkill, but I never have an issue with the truck or the Civic and the same intervals were done on the F150 by my neighbor (bought it new). The Titan runs 80 on the interstate for thousands of miles every month with a constant load. The Civic sits for weeks, then driven around town or on the occasional trip. 2 extremes, Mobile 1 oil and filters forever, and the engines look new inside. Pretty good testimony, I think.

Everything in the inside is cardboard and the craftsmanship looks like they pay kindergarten kids to put them together (Honestly I think they would do a better job) I happened to open one up and saw that my oil was being filtered by paper and cardboard. And the drain back valve sticks open. I'll try and open another one and open a mobil 1 I'm curious as to their quality as well.

I use the best Mobile 1 filter (they have different levels). I also use the Wix and Purolator in my other cars with fine results.

If you are using a cartridge type filter, you need to use a FLEECE filter. These do not break down like paper filters. I don't know if there is a fleece spin on filter in the market place. I agree with 72rogergt, Fram filters are crap. Regarding spin on filters, make sure to at least be sure that it has a anti drain back valve in it because it does make a difference IMO.
MANN cartridge filters are FLEECE if that helps anyone, and they are economical.

Fram have been cardboard for a long time. I always uses Wix filters, good filtering media and good construction. Lots of other good names though, Purolator, Motorcraft, Baldwin, AC Delco, Amsoil, Mobil 1, Napa etc. Many are actually made by only a few different companies (ie CARQUEST premium filters are Wix). Do some searches on the internet and tons of people have cut into filters. Pretty much everything is built better than a Fram.

Fram oil filters used to be made by Allied-Signal in Greenville, Ohio (they used to be one of my accounts when I was still contracting...). A serious facility making a good product and people making a decent living with medium-scale union wages. They sold and moved the business in the late '90's or early 2000's. The cheap stuff bearing the 'Fram' label, nowadays, apparently bears no resemblence (other than the color) to the product I saw coming off the line twenty years ago. Sad...

5000 miles isn't much. People recommend 3K and that would be ok o an old engine, but new one have much tighter tolerances and run a bit cleaner, I would go for 7k if it was only hwy miles. The best way to know is to send a sample of your oil for test.

Honeywell bought them up and moved all the assembly to china. (explains the poor quality) |
