Was wondering if anyone has ever installed T-Tops from a 78-79 T-bird on a 72 GTS? It looks to me like the front half of the roof is the same. I have a 79 T-Top T-bird, and I'm getting a 72 GTS, so I will look at them side by side.

Yes. My friends assisted with that many years ago.  A half vinal top hid the weld seam behind the t-tops. Some Bondo where the windshield posts were welded.  A custom headliner hid all the work inside the car.  That was a 73 Gran Torino. We did that in 1982. Looking back, it was complete hack master. We had no  clue what we were doing. It came out good and someone bought it.

That might be interesting.

I'd consider the donor car, how those T-Tops fared as far as leaking or reliability etc. If they were great in those 78-79 T-bird's, then I'd say the swap is not bad given the donor car in hand.

I always wondered how a Ranchero would look with a sunroof from a small car like an 80's Toyota where it moved up and back all the way. I try to forget that idea, it might not look right.

I think I would swap the entire windshield frame, since you've got that bar that runs down the middle. Lots of work, but boy how cool it would be to have a T-Top Sportsroof..

I've not had a problem with my 79 T-tops leaking. Been trying to find some new seals, but no luck so far.. I've heard that rubber seals can be revived with ATF. Anyone tried that?

That's great Tom, to hear your T-tops didn't leak. My 2nd gen Explorer all do slightly, the moat that catches the water has seams in it, and the OEM sealant gets old and cracks, leaving a tiny water seep onto the headliner in heavy rain.

I'd retain all of the stock main roof structure, only cut out what has to be, to put in the new pieces. If another car model had better sources for seals, and also rarely leaked or had rattles, air noise etc, those may be a better choice. I don't do GM, but for example how well is the 80's Firebird supported, and/or are they any good?

This would be a neat project.  Would it be for a formal roof or fastback?  I would think it would work better with the formal roof.

This discussion has been tossed around a lot. I could see it more on a formal roof. Sportsroof cars have that tapered arch which could cause some issues.

Overall, you would have to remove the inner structure of the T-top 78-79 birds, pull the skin off the torino roof, and transplant it.

Rework the roof skins as needed, and then open all your time welding and body working things.

Personally...I would also be reinforcing the body shell because I have to imagine 77-79 tbirds with T-tops suffered some issues with cowlshake problems.

Also side note...
completely side note here...always remember chopping a roof can cause adverse issues.
Ask me how I know:

tapered arch? do you mean the profile of the roof skin is different, or is it the same up until the point where it extends rearward? IDK for sure, i'm asking ...

cowl shake with a body on frame config?

So I just picked up a 78 T-top Tbird parts car for $350. I made a template of the forward section of the roof with the t-tops, and cut it at the aft edge of the rear t-top molding. The front I cut at the top edge of the windshield trim, and extended it down the A-pillar a bit. From what I see, the forward part of the 72 Gran Torino Sports roof is exactly like the T-bird roof. This is not something I would tackle myself, but I think to have a 72 Gran Torino Sportsroof with T-tops, I'd be willing to pay a professional to install the structure for me...

The issue is the GTS roof has an arch on the side glass.
Formal roof cars would be a better candidate but it can be made to work.

I think you're right. A solid roof Tbird, LTDII, or 77-79 Cougar would be a better choice for those T-tops.
