Hey everybody, I putting a built 460 into my ‘75 Cougar CR7. Pulled out the third member to realize it had 3.00 gears! Can’t have that with a big block, can we? Later on I found a third member out of a truck with some 3.89s (open but it’ll do for now on my shoestring budget) but I’m faced with an issue. Wondering if I can transfer the gears over despite the different bearing sizes and the truck gears are 31-spline. (bear with me this is my first time dabbling in this field…) Just curious as to what my options are, thank you very much for your time! :)

Nothing wrong with 3.00's with a 460, I run a warmed over 460/C6, 27.7" tires with 3.25's and they are almost too much for cruising over 60mph. In my Ranchero's previous life it had a stock 460/C6 from a '76 T-bird and I installed a 2.50 gear rear axle after the original differential started leaking and having other issues. The stock engine with a Holley 9834 VS carb gave me an honest 17.5 mpg on the highway. The BB 460 will not really care what rear differential you have until it gets too low. Picking a rear gear ratio is like picking a camshaft for the engine, very easy to go too big on the camshaft(or in this case too low a gear ratio) and just ruin the drivability of the vehicle, same goes for the rear gear ratio. Unless you are going racing with your Cougar, I suspect you'll hate the 3.89 gears after the initial smile the acceleration gives you. Just my opinion but hope this helps. Good luck with whatever you choose.

Yeah, It's a Hybrid...It burns gas and tires. No matter how good she looks, somebody, somewhere, is tired of her sh*t. Beauty is skin deep, ugliness goes clear to the bone. |

Late to reply here but weighing in anyways. I agree that 3.00 is totally fine especially with a bigger engine. That’s the equation… engine torque x transmission gear x final drive gear.
31 spline differential will not work with the stock 28 spline axles, obviously. If you really want the shorter gear ratio from the truck you could move the gears over to the original dif but I don’t really see the point. With a 3 speed auto especially that 3.00 taller gear will be a much better match. Tall gear = lower number ratio (3.00) Short gear = higher number ratio (4.11)

I guess I should elaborate on interchange options. 31 and 28 spline setups run identical gear sizes on the 9”. 35 spline is also the same. The difference is the differential and housing, there are 3 common bearing sizes on those but most oe 28 and 31 spline setups run the most common smaller ones. Then there are some special in-between race setups to run smaller carrier sizes in larger housings. Because the ford 9” is pretty much the most popular setup in existence there are all kinds of combos people came up with over the decades.
If you have it apart, spend the money on a limited slip of some kind. I have one from a Lincoln sitting in a box somewhere. I would sell it for cheap. Maybe I’ll post it in the classifieds one of these days

If all you're asking is can you swap the ring and pinion from case to case, the answer is yes.
