Don, those are the DYNAMAX siren speakers. Will they really hamper the cooling of the 460 that much? That's where they were installed on the Torino Police cars back in the day...

May have to look at alternative mounting locations if they will impede cooling severely!Ouch

I just react by all the overheating issues many late Mustang guys have. Those have much too small grille area, that's their problem. I doubt those horns will be a problem if the engine isn't high rpm and high strung. Three of my late Crown Vics had the police siren behind the bumper, and those were really big.

Hey guys... yeah, I'm still kicking but just not as high as I once did! Confused

I've not made very much progress on the Tomato this summer due to physical limitations, extreme temperatures at the dealership, other pressing commitments and trying to locate hardware that I once had to mount parts that have now gone missing from the car being in two unrelated shops.Censored

A fellow Torinoite sent me a set of AC condenser mounting brackets (I have since found mine!) to use in mocking up the core support assembly and that's when I discovered the missing hardware to mount the headlight bucket support parts. Guess I'll spend a few hours going thru the MPC to cull the hardware component numbers and then see what AMK offers that is close to what Ford used during her assembly.

sh*t like this is what really infuriates me about turning my project over to others to do the work I'm unable to perform because they aren't as anal as I am about using the correct bits during reassembly!

Anyway, with cooler temps at hand, hope I can get in there and kick ass on getting her cleaned up and ready for another bout of BODYSHOP ROULETTE!

That is a great looking rad support Joe.  Hopefully you can find the original hardware, I know how hard that can be to track down. Maybe check with John Steady, he might have the hardware you need in one of his parts cars.

Somewhat productive day Saturday. Got the Pertronix ignition coil relay kit 90% installed. Need to find a male bullet connector that will plug into the factory female coil wire connector so I don't have to cut into the original factory harness. She's gone this long without any major modifications so why start now?? (If anyone knows of the correct bullet connector PLEEZE let me know!!)

I then jumped over to work on the Tomato for a bit. The new hardware arrived last week so I set about reinstalling the headlight bucket support bracketry onto the core support. I think the headlight buckets have already been painted, but if they haven't, I may hang them as well to insure everything is where they need to be. With the core support up in the air at eye level, it's easier to see how things line up.

One thing I did notice was the transmission cooler is not setting level so that's something I'll remedy next weekend......

Felt good to work on the 'Mater a bit and see some progress even though it may be tiny in comparison to all that still needs to be done.

BABY STEPS ARE BETTER THAN NO STEPS!!!! Thumbs Up

Another somewhat productive day on the Tomato front Saturday. Got all the core support brackets squared up and level and then started looking at areas the need attention.

Noticed the transmission cooler is still not sitting level so I'll slot the mounting holes in the hood latch brace to allow me some adjustment to get it align properly.

Also did some rough measurements and I think I might be able to mount the Dynamax sirens below the headlight bucket lower supports. Waiting on a couple buddies to send me dimensions between the frame rail and the underside of the headlight support to make sure they'll fit before starting down that rabbit hole!!!

Next area needing attention is the transmission cooler hard line run up the side of the radiator. Now that I have the air condenser condenser mounted, I see I'll need to rebend them to fit tighter together and secure to the core support to clear the condenser. I'll also need to modify the core support opening for the hard line to go thru to insure nothing rubbing together that could cause an issue down the road.

I also found that the upper line of the ac condenser was bent slightly causing it to rub against the radiator. Must have gotten bent in shipping so I'll straighten that out like it need to be.

And before I left, I put the first coat of Ford Dark Corporate Blue on the water pump. I'll second coat it next weekend and maybe shoot some other engine part that need the blue reapplied.

Slowly learning how to do things with my current disabilities but still a bit frustratingg trying to stand still to take a picture or spray paint a component, but I'm gonna finish this bitch before I die!!

Chipping away at it! I like the attention to the trans cooler routing.

Well been a couple weeks since I last posted, but I did make some progress the past few weekends.

Got the AC condenser line straightened out…

and marked the core support opening to trim a bit for the transmission auxiliary cooler hard lines to pass thru cleanly.

Next up was to slot the mounting holes on the latch brace to mount the transmission auxiliary cooler…

and then remounted the cooler level between the latch brace and headlight bucket brace.

Now that the cooler was positioned correctly, I turned my attention to designing the transmission auxiliary cooler hard lines. I straightened a coat hanger to use as my bending pattern and started forming the hanger to mimic the centerline of the hard line runs.

I was able to use one template to layout the two lines.

The cooler supply line (red) will be hard mounted to the radiator cooler outlet port…

and the cooler return line (blue) will hard mount to the transmission return line.

I need to find a couple dual 5/16” R clips to keep the two lines together as they run from the cooler up the core support to the opening to the engine side of the support.

Once the 5/16 stainless tubes are formed, I’ll add the fittings and flares to the lines for attaching to the other components.

Next on the agenda is to start breaking the core support back down and doing another final cleaning/painting of the various pieces involved with the core support assembly.

That's good progress, I do love the detail.

But, don't make any transmission lines with 5/16" tubing. Ford upgraded all trans lines in the 80's to the 3/8" size, to improve fluid flow, for better cooling. Ford also upgraded the trans lines again almost 30 years later, the six and ten speeds all use 1/2" lines now.

The least anyone can do is to use 3/8" lines, it's always better for ATF cooling than the old smaller 5/16" size. In 1993 I installed pre-made steel 3/8" lines from a local auto parts store into my 86 Crown Vic. The stock police oil cooler made a great trans cooler when I rebuilt the engine and trans. I used those easy to get lines with flared fittings, to connect everything without any rubber hose. I put an o-ring into each connection to prevent any leaks. That's standard procedure now with most OEM flared fittings/connections. I want to use the nice flexible braided lines from Jeg's etc, for my newer projects, that stuff is high but it's easier to route than steel lines.

Don,

Since I've already installed a new IN LINE TUBE 5/16" stainless line kit from the trans to the radiator (with the auxiliary cooler line) it's too late to increase the tube size, but should I ever replace these lines (or on my other Ford projects) in the future, I will definitely upgrade to the larger diameter tubes!

Thanks for the info......Thumbs Up

Good good, I learned that when I rebuilt my CV, the fitting on the transmission came in two sizes back then(1993). I asked my Ford parts guy and he told me the story, which was before I ordered the parts. So all that's needed is to change the flare fitting adapter on the trans, and the bigger lines will then work.

Well Saturday was a disheartening day on the Torino front as I partially broke down the 460 to once again clean it up and repaint it from sitting in the un-climate controlled garage of the half-assed "bodyman" for 2 years covered in sanding dust and looking like a 20 year old barn find once I got her back.

I guess one bright side to pulling everything off the engine and removing the front sheetmetal is once again being able to access the firewall, suspension, chassis and transmission lines to address a few things I noticed weren't quite up to snuff.

FUN FUN FUN

Wow. Sorry you have to deal with that; I sent mine to paint without a driveline or interior, I am now over a year from when it came back and I am still finding locations with body dust or buff spatter. (As a matter of fact, I just last week finally cleaned the buff spatter from under the hood, and I still have places like on the panel above the bumper, where You couldn't see it if you tried, but it reflects onto the bumper after it was in place. It will drive you nuts;

Bright side, you get to revisit and freshen your memory on the overall state of areas you haven't seen in a while.

You got this.

Great to see an update Joe, but that sucks that the "body man" left you car in such a mess after all the work you did on it. Once this car is done, the detailing will be second to none.

Well I'm still alive and slowly plugging away on the ole girl... survived the recent winter storms and finally got over to the dealership to do a little something on the Tomato.

Finished removing a snapped off drive screw that secures the baffle to the underside of the Cobra Jet intake manifold (oops, didn't take an after pic!) ....

With the drive screw drilled out, I flipped the manifold over and set the QuadraJet into place to see how things lined up and what bits and pieces I still need to source to mate the carb to my engine. The QJ I scored was for an automatic, non-ac car but mine will have air so I need to find the correct bracket and throttle position solenoid to install on the carb.

The QJ also uses a divorced choke assembly on the 429CJ's....

so I'll also need to find the choke stove tube assembly, the pull down divorced choke assembly and the stove cover gasket. I looked on line prior to going over to play and found no one offers the correct profile gasket at a reasonable price ($18-$32 for this little piece Confused)....

so I just made a template and will make my own. Wink

My google search also turned up NO NOS choke tube nor divorced choke assemblies so I guess I'll also be making/adapting something to fill these voids. I'll be posting a second thread under PARTS WANTED with a couple sketches the parts in question.

Appreciate any and all leads to the needed ball fulcrum rocket arm parts as well as the Ford Rochester QuadraJet bits!! Also a recommendation and an informative QuadraJet manual??Ermm

Thanks guys Beer

No pictures taken this weekend but did start putting the engine back together. Since I'm going to have my original engine to build into a "460CJ" I can clean up and detail the engine that's in her now once I pull it out and install the new one.

I've also decided to go with an electric choke (can still buy them new) since I'll have a 12V source close for the throttle stop solenoid and no pieces for the divorced choke mechanism can be found.

Once I have the engine reassembled, I'll tackle fabricating the auxiliary transmission cooler hard lines then blow the core support apart to reclean and detail everything again Ouch before putting it all back together.

Should be pretty good at all this once I (ever???) get her done. Confused

No progress pictures this weekend but more work on the engine and made a list of new gaskets I need to pick up to continue reassembly of the "spare" 460.

Pray I can get her completed before Armedegon begins!!Confused

Still pluging away..... slowly! I have a close friend helping as an "investigator" talking to local engine builders about capabiliities and familarity with the 385 series Ford big blocks. Have two really good prospects and one even has an inhouse engine dyno so we'll know what my "460CJ" is making out the door. Thumbs Up
