This is probably a simple topic but one I don't know the answer. The distributor cap that was on my car when I purchased it was a two part, an adaptor and a top cover. I have since put a newer cap on it and am wondering what the purpose of a two part cap is.

There is a YouTube video that explains it, and also shows how you can go back to the smaller cap by removing the spacer. As they explain it, it’s simply to allow a for a hotter/bigger/stronger spark that doesn’t run the risk of cross-firing to a wrong lead. I’ll see if I can find that. It was on a videoe about the Dura-spark vs. points…….

Don’t know if this is the same one that CobraJoe posted…..but here’s the one ai referred to——
[edit: - Ok, so…….I checked— it’s not the same one, but it’s by the same guy. The one that I posted is more about the fallacy of the cross-fire claims. But, if you go to EITHER video, you get the info, and you can go to the guy’s list of videos and watch the rest of them, too.] Dfox

Thanks to both of you for the info, I've been chasing a dying while driving issue lately and wanted to make sure I didn't need the two part distributor cap. I have just located the probable problem, a cracked bare wire on the distributor pickup assembly. The videos do a good job explaining the cap situation.
