So after doing some checking for one of the guys in dealing with his tilt steering column, discovered a few things (unconfirmed myself, take with grain of salt).

Evidently the 72-79 tilt columns share parts with F series/Bronco tilt mechanisms up to around 1990-1991 with the F series and Broncos.

West Coast Cougars had a good 9 year old video on YouTube showing the process for fixing some know issues with tilt mechanisms that may be jammed/locked where they have replacement steel shaft pin kits with "C" clips at each end of the pin to keep it locked in place. Looks like you have to tear the column down a bit, which means pulling off the car but aside from that, pretty simple fix.

Here's the video I found which would apply to 72-79 stuff we all have here.
Looks like this also applies to the older 67-71 cars as well.

Info off the video:
In this video, our resident tilt column expert Don W shows a couple of easy repairs you can do at home. We have new improved locking lever pins with C-clips that won't slide out like the originals, as well as new delrin bumpers for the 67-69 columns. If you're not mechanically inclined, or your column has more difficult issues, we can help! We can repair / rebuild / service just about any FoMoCo tilt / tilt-away steering column from the 1967-1978 era. Watch our other video on the repair service, and contact us for more info. 1967-69 locking lever pin:

Thanks for the good info. I may need to upgrade something within my steering column as I swap it into my Ranchero.

I kept my original 93 Explorer column to use because it has the nice wiper stalk, tilt, and the wheel with cruise control. I found a new late 80's wheel from a Bronco with switches. So making it fit might be interesting, maybe some of the same upgrades will apply.
