Hey all,
Going through a 1972 top loader and i cannot for the life of me find a diagram or info on the 72-72 top loaders with the seat belt switch detent layout.

Might anyone have any info on this. Pic from David Kee for what the detents look like...

There are a few guys here with some toploader experience that might be able to help you out.  Have you tried emailing David Kee?

Yes. I have this one, seems the 72 and 73 units with the seat belt switch is rather elusive.

Try sending a PM or email to Eliteman76 (Andy).  I know he has a '72 Toploader and I think he's been into it a few times.

Hey Vince, I was talking with Peter about this, I actually don't have the specific info on the 72-73 Toploader. I know the 72-73 Torino Toploader is different. When I had mine gone through many moons ago, the guys that did mine said there was some stuff they had not seen before, they were used to pre-1970 Toploaders from mustangs.

With that said, David Key Toploaders will be the defacto source on Ford Toploader info. Only headache is getting a hold of them. A couple times I have tried calling them recently trying to help another member, I could never reach anyone or get responses to emails.
Hopefully the folks running that company are ok, because without them, the Top Loader fans will be in a world of hurt.

Side note, the 72-74 Toploaders for Q codes had an option for a T.R.S switch on the driver's side front of the main case.

Page 16-20-04 has the exploded view of the detent rods. Peter, sent you messages on FB with the pictures from the manual.

Side note, TRS means Transmission Regulated Spark.
Related to vacuum switches related to cold weather operation and advance vacuum.
1973 manual set
Volume 6
Page 165 in terms: TRS
"A system that controls vacuum to the distributor, preventing vacuum advance while in the immediate gears. Generally used with manual transmissions."

Page 8 in the 1973 volume 6 goes into detail.

Side note: mine was disconnected and never reconnected. LOL

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the info; David Kee responded with the following:
Quote I don't have a diagram but the 3 short springs that came in the kit are correct for that transmission. You should have 5 detents that have black color to them and be .459" long and one silver long detent that goes on the top of the 1-2 shift rail. There should also be 2 .418 long interlock pins. The order is one spring and detent under the reverse rail, detent on top of the reverse shift rail, interlock pin in 3-4 shift rail, detent on top of the 3-4 shift rail, interlock pin in 1-2 shift rail, long silver detent on top of the 1-2 sift rail with a lighter tension spring above it. On the side one detent and spring in each hole next to the 1-2 rail and 3-4 rail. If you have a detent that shows wear on one end you can use it where there is a spring and put the slightly worn end toward the spring.

With this info, I was able to confirm i had put the unit together correctly. But, I also took the time to modify the early exploded view to show the 72-73 detent layout.
You will note, 28B, 24B, 72, and the number of detents going through the side of the case. This is updated just for the detent changes, other changes i did not make. (For instance this still shows the early shift rods).

I was missing the spring 24B, which he referred to as the "lighter spring", and he provided the size of this spring as being: "It is just a utility compression spring that is 1/4" diameter x 1" long x .020 wire diameter".

I hope this will help someone in the future!
