1973 Ford Gran Torino Sport

I have created a web page with pictures on my personal page for this car - https://johnstuthard.com/73torino

Here is the history about this amazing car.  In 1973 my grandfather saw this very Gran Torino Sport spinning on a car display at a Ford dealership in Portland Or. He just had to have this car and promptly bought it as his retirement present to himself. After driving it a few years his health declined, and he gave this Torino to his son, who was my father. I vividly remember being driven all over Portland in the 80’s in this car as I was growing up. For years my father would take this car to local car shows in Portland, and he had a few trophies that he proudly displayed. Unfortunately, my father’s own declining health led him to doing the same thing, bestowing this car to his son, me. I have had this wonderful car the last few years, up in Montana. I actually drove it here. It was an amazing, smooth 1k ride from Portland. Today, I still love this car. But as life has it, I am needing to choose between this project, or our 1956 Ford F100, which we also have a rich family heritage with. Unfortunately resources, space and time only go so far, and we would rather see someone love and restore this great car back to top condition than to see it sit, and slowly decay away.

HERE IS WHAT YOU GET

The Torino is a mechanically sound driver, ready for full restoration. It is all here. But She has issues here and there. What do you expect from a 51 year old car, right?

  • Nice magnum wheels with good tires (see pics)
  • She needs paint. The old clear coat is peeling in places (see pics). A few dents.
  • She also has some rust (front fender and lower door surface rust) see pics
  • She needs interior redone (see pics) the old vinyl is cracking on the front seats, and the dash. Package shelf has faded in the sun.
  • Rebuilt original motor (Ford 400 ) with 20k on it
  • With 4bbl Holly and Edelbrock intake (Original manifold comes with the car if you want it to be original)

The Torino is currently being offered for 12k cash. No low ball offers please.

If the car doesn’t sell for that, we will find a way keep it, eventually finishing her off to original condition and keep her for my son. I'm good with that. Just don't tell my wife.

If you are interested, and would treat her right, email us at j.stuthard@gmail.com

Thanks for looking...

Very nice car, it looks like a wonderful place to start a project for anyone

BTW, what drivetrain have you put into the 56 F100? I know of at least one completed F100 like that with an Explorer chassis under it, and 2-3 others that I don't recall if they finished them. The near match of the frame body mounts to the 95-01 Explorers make them straight forward to swap either the engine trans etc, but especially the entire chassis, with AWD, the 302 and a 4R70W.

Hi Don, So the 56 f100 currently has a stock frame in back and the front has a GM clip. The drive train is a warmed up 1970 Ford 302, a FMX auto trans, and a limited slip dana 44.

The plan right now is to put a stock frame (we have it) and install a mustang II front and possibly swap out the Dana with a Ford 9". I actually like the fmx, but it's so old school, and we could do better :) Debating on leaving the 302 in it, or going to a 351w. But the 302 is a great fit for this truck.

You might go find any 302 Explorer to test drive briefly. They move very well for a 4500lb truck, and given the apparent ease to modify the old F100 bodies to go onto the rolling chassis, I think it's a viable option if you don't have a ton already invested, time and money. So you are already have a plan and progress, that is likely cheaper than starting over etc.

I have two Ranchero's and my last plan was to mix parts and sell one with the stock things I didn't need. Then the keeper would get a 2003-2005 Crown Vic front frame and suspension. But a couple of people have checked into dropping the whole body onto an entire late Crown Vic chassis. These 70's Fords have terrible choices for brake upgrades, and the suspension stuff isn't much better. So I expect to find a decent 2003-2011 CV, GM, or Town Car to take the chassis from. The later ones also had a Watt's link rear suspension, but they all had ABS except for base model police cars.

Have fun with the project in any case.
