Hope someone can help with this problem I’m having with the fuel gauge on my new to me 1976 elite. At first all the gauges did not work and when I pulled the cluster thinking it would be the voltage regulator I also found the printed circuit was falling apart and regulator was not working. Replace printed circuit board and voltage regulator new one is solid state. Hooked it up and had 4.5 volts at the sending unit which I saw had been replaced very recently. Sending unit with about a half tank of gas read 43 ohms but the gauge pegs past full when everything plug in. I have read that some gauges don’t work with the solid state regulator and require the old pulse style. Could this be my problem? Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks

FWIW - I replaced my tank, with a new sender etc. My guage reads weird, but never had it operational previously. What i do know is that all my in dash parts are original, the wired has not been abused.
In my case, i do believe the sender is the culprit.

I recently went through all this on my 72. The new resister type did not work for me. I went through 3 new replacements (the other gauges started working) but not my gas . I actually found a NOS one for sale on eBay, and It works! I would suggest you find an old style. (after the gauge started working, I could tell it was reading way off. I ended up replacing the sending unit as well, and now everything works.! (except the clock)

I will answer my own question after I found the problem. The sending unit had been replaced before I got the car and when I checked power and grounds at the end of the repair they were all correct but still when I hooked up the sending unit the gauge pegged itself full. While rechecking ohms on the sender I noticed that the connector which was all factory was opposite on the sender meaning the positive power hooked up to ground side of the sender not the resistor side. So the new sender that was put in had connections opposite of my factory 1976 Torino. Putting this out there in case it could help someone else

Hi. I am having the same issues on my 74. There is a new sending unit with existing wiring and regulator. I am getting a pulsing dimmer 12v test light off of my fuel gauge wire. Right now with it all hooked up I am getting a past full reading on the gauge have you had any luck determining the cause?
