Hi guys. Just joined the forum. Spent the last two hours reading through old posts about headers. I wrote to summit racing and asked them to recommend a set of headers for me. And gave them my set up info of course. Which is:
1972 Ford Gran Torino Sport. 351 Cleveland 2V. FMX auto column shift. They recommended me Hedman Hedders part number 88320. They are $245.97 which is very reasonable. But in the description it states (standard trans column shift-no standard trans floor shift-no auto trans column shift-yes auto Trans floor shift-yes) Now if I go to Jegs, and look at the same headers, same part number 88320 and picture it says will ONLY work with c4 Transmission. Does anyone know if these will work with a FMX? Or maybe someone on here has a 351c 2v with column shift FMX that could tell me what they are using. I found a set of hookers online but they said will not work with power steering. I'm no transmission man but I would assume if those work with c4 I don't think a FMX looks much different. Any help would be appreciated. PS my heads are the Aussie heads but everything is the same size as the factory 2v heads I took off. I'm getting anxious To get my car back together and see how it runs. Thanks again. |

Well. I've spent all day making phone calls and this is what I learned.
Called hedman- they said they only have the 88320 and will not fit my car. Only c4 trans. Barnett performance- only has the 88320 Summit racing - only has the 88320 Jeggs- only has the 88320 And I called the place that makes them that I got from a link in this forum. They can make me a set for $1,000.00. Yea I cant of ford that. I can't belive there are no headers for a simple factory set up. |

IIRC the c4 is a little bit smaller trans, but not a whole lot different than a FMX, now the c6 is a bit larger.
maybe someone else will have more info.......... |

Thanks for the reply. The last place I contacted was Holley. The guy had a set of hookers that the website said will not work. But his book said they will. He said maybe the book was right and the website is wrong. He said he will try to find out and call me back tomorrow. I'm gonna keep my fingers crossed. So far every company I've talked to has said c4 only. But thanks again I been searching the Internet for someone that has the same engine and tranny that has had success.

I wish I'd have kept my paper work from my Ranchero swap. I switched to a 302 with an AOD which is based on the FMX. It even used the same driveshaft. I could very well have used the Hedman headers but I had the cable actuated column shifter. I did have to tweek them because they were tight to the tranny. Particularly on the left side. I had the engine and trans on the floor with the headers attached. I then ran a ratchet strap around the engine and headers where they bolted to the heads so they would move up top. I inserted a baseball bat into the collector put my feet on the tranny and "clearanced" the headers. ![]() |

The Helmans I was looking at says it works with column shift c4. But not column shift c6 or FMX.

I have those same headers. When I bolted them into my "old" car, I had the 351C & C-4. I had to "tweak" them to get the lined up with the cross member. By tweaking; I mean putting a crowbar in the collector (after headers are bolted on engine) and pulling it away from the tranny. Go slow & don't go crazy; you should be fine.
I am using these same headers with a T-5 bell housing and tranny as well. Looks to be enough room for an FMX...I'd probably try a C-6 as well.

Crites' site says they have '72 351C Torino heads, but you have to call them for info: (740) 983-4777 or (740) 983-2273.
I'm using their 460 headers on my car... things are tight, but they fit! GOOD LUCK

good luck with the headers!
Of all the things I know about these cars I do not claim to be the 351C expert. Others have dealt with this and should be able to chime in. BTW, WELCOME to the Family!
