I don't think anyone has installed those yet on a 70's Ford, I posted that I have a used set from a 2004 model to attempt with. Those 2003-2011 CV's have a parking brake cable that goes in at 90*, and a bracket welded to the rear housing to hold that cable. The backing plate will have to be clocked so the cable can go into it that way, so it may not work easily on every rearend.

I noticed that. Thought it was an early model at first. For 50 with all new brakes I got it. Book said 03-11 same.

Yeah, if they can work it's a great upgrade. They are the same on all the CV's, Gran Marquis, and Town Cars of those years. I bought a rotor and pad kit years ago when I got the brake parts, thinking they'd go on my Mark VII. The orientation for the parking brake cable was something I didn't think of in the beginning.

another surprise is the 4bolt mounting bracket is 180 off. Why did ford put that stupid rubber collar on the top half of rear end. only holds sh*t that rotted off the mounting brackets.

Ok stupid question. on our 9in rear ends the bolt holes on the end that hold axle in are the holes 2in horizontal 4in vertical or vice versa.

The 9" rears have a small bolt pattern on the earlier models like the 1972, and it's a little larger in later models. I'm fuzzy on when that changed, during 1973 I think. The late 8.8's have a slightly different pattern, which is kind of close to the old small pattern. Most likely at least two new holes will have to be drilled on the 8.8 backing plate.

It's not the holes it the fact that the holes are at a 180 degree difference. my pinto is 4ln a cross or horizontal and 2in vertical. this 8.8 is just the opposite. Only thing I see would be to some how change it on the rear end. I wondered if the 9in was like the 8.8 or like the 8in

On my '72 (August build), the bolts are farther apart horizontally and closer together vertically. The long sides of the rectangle are parallel to the ground.

That's the normal way, and the CV backing plate would have to be oriented so the parking brake cable comes out on a side where there is space for the cable and a mounting bracket. If there is an object like a leaf spring hanger or any other bracket etc, control arm mount, then the cable couldn't work well there.

The 96-2002 CV rear disc backing plates are just about a bolt-on for the small bearing '72 housing, IIRC. I actually used these on my small bearing '72 Lincoln Mark IV housing I use on my Ranchero.

Ok so its the brake cable that made them go 180 degrees from normal.Well only have 50$ in them. It's a shame because the brakes are like new.

on 1972 and early-mid year 1973, Ford used the small bearing housings. The 8.8 used on Explorers, Fox body Mustangs, and the crown Vics all used the small 9" bearing. The main issue comes with the Torino 9" housing, the lock collars included are a 1/3 smaller on the outer diameter and narrower by 1/8" to 3/16" for the press fit "wedding ring" that locks the wheel bearing on the axle.
I dealt with multiple brands of wheel bearings over the years, and NONE of the suppliers have the correct 72-73 small bearing Torino 9" bearing lock ring. Now...anyone that knows me I have never been gentle with my GTS, and I willingly bang shifted this car, slid and drifted it at will.the 72-73 9" housings do not tolerate much side loading. With that said, the rear disc brakes should adapt with the 72-73 small bearing backing plates but some fab and welding is needed for the e brake cabling. Explorer/mountaineer rear discs also work, Psquare75 did a conversion on his elite. Vaguely recall he had to flip/swap brakes left to right / right to left but bolted it together. Biggest issue was the proportioning valve. I was always looking to swap over, but ended up installing my '76 big bearing 9" in place of my 1972 Housing. Got tired of axle walk issues even with the safety plates installed. At the end of the day, this is hot rodding. It's metal. Chop-cut-weld. If you want to adapt the brakes, and just need the brackets off the CV 8.8, saw them off, and weld to your 9" housing. Flip side, weld the spring brackets to the 8.8 and just run the 8.8. Granted while it'd be awesome because then you have tone rings for ABS brakes, the 9" makes things so much easier to service. |

Well and good. As I looked at the pinto last night I wondered how I put springs and rear end in it all by myself 7yrs ago.I am just too old.

on a positive note it appears there is enough room to put my bearing plate over it and drill new holes. This 8.8 is def. a large bearing car.

That says a lot, and my 72 Gran Torino had more than its share of rear bearing and axle issues. We lost a bearing on a 1200 mile trip to Minnesota in the late 70's, had to get it towed about 40 miles to my grandfather's garage. He got the bearing and axle out given it was seized hard, it took a while to clear the less of metal. I got the car and had a couple of axle bearings go out, the same right one. Then I lost the axle one day going to work, it broke right next to the bearing, on the highway as I was getting off. I limped it around the corner(right turn), and then it fell off. The dealership I was working at was a few hundred yards away, so I got it towed, and during the day found a used axle for $75. I think I'll work with my two 73's and do what I can for disc brakes if it's not too bad to convert. My final project I'm still hoping to use a 2003-2006 CV frame, the whole chassis, thus the ABS and nice front suspension.
