Hi
Does anyone know why some 72 sports got the trunk edge molding and some did not? Was it a option? it seems if the car had the trunk edge molding you did not get the molding on the lower valence and vis versa.
Thanks

I would guess it was a mid year change.

Most of the cars I’ve picked up that had the trunk edge molding were laser stripe cars and if they had the wide body side moldings then they had the rear valance trim pieces.

I agree, this is generally what I have seen to be true as well.  With that said, I have seen cars with no moldings at all, and some with both. Of course I am not 100% sure they left the factory that way.  The Ford Master Parts Catalog shows both as being available but does not stipulate which cars got which.  My car is a laser stripe car and it only had the trunk edge molding and I can 100% confirm thats the way it left the factory (purchased new by my dad).  Personally, I don't like the valence molding.  It looks cheap and tacked on to me.

Ok. Thanks guys. I prefer the valence molding. Not a fan of the trunk molding. I never noticed the laser stripe cars had the trunk molding instead of the valence. Thanks

Like a lot of these cars, I think it depends where assembled and if they had the parts on hand.  Mine is a laser stripe car built pretty late in the model year (July 15 '72) in Atlanta.  I do have the valence molding but no trunk edge, and this is a one-family car so I know it never had it.

It was dependant on assembly plant and build date, Later build dates closer to the begining of 1973 order date,

Ok. Makes more sense now. I don’t see why they would change such a small detail during production but Ford did do stranger things🤣. Thanks guys

How do you know this?  I'd like to see some support for this theory.

This seems is probably the case for the most part, but there does seem to be generalities.
