Hey guys, I’m looking to upgrade my suspension in my 1975 Ford Elite. 351w, with power steering, power brakes, and AC. Id like to make it have modern handling. I’ve read the stickies and I’m slightly confused. How does the car drive/feel with 500 in/lb springs? What about 700 in/lb? What are some of yalls springs for front and back? I understand lower would make it softer. I’m looking to make it handle great but not break my back over a pothole. Should I be looking into coilovers or bags? I’m very lost with suspension. Any info or input would be greatly appreciated.

I don't think you would be able to make it handle like a modern car without changing the upper and lower control arms and going to a coil over setup.

The factory coil springs are soft, and given the age, now even softer. The later Crown Vic police front springs are a great improvement with a nice ride still. I don't recall the spring rate of those, but they are over 500inlbs. I bought front springs before those CVPI existed(1987), Moog aftermarket and cut them, yet to test. I chose a spring rate in the 525 range, old guess, I suspect that range is very good to start with.

You need much better shocks, sway bar, and the strut rod bushings, plus CA bushing/BJ's of course. The springs and sway bars(plus the frame bushings for them) will make the biggest change over stock.

If your rear end doesn't have a sway bar, add one. That will do a lot to keep the rear in line.

A prior owner swapped the rear in my '72 wagon to one out of a '74 coupe with a sway bar. It's no Miata, but it holds the line in freeway-speed turns a lot better than I would expect.

Check out Spohn Performance for suspension parts, a few of us have installed the rear control arms and are very satisfied with them.

For coil springs, have you read these pages:

Ride is very subjective, so it's hard to say what you think is too stiff or soft.  I'd say you don't want a spring with less than 400 in/lbs unless you want a marshmellow soft ride.  The CVPI springs are probably the best performance spring upgrade for out cars, but they do ride fairly stiff. They are roughly 710 inlbs. Install those with a set of Addco sway bars and it will make a drastic difference in the handling.  Keep in mind Moog CVPI springs are no longer available.  However, other companies do offer equilvilents.  Look up 1999 Crown Victoria and select the police springs.  For instance MEVOTECH SMS80090 or LESJÖFORS 4127566.

See this rock auto link:

Other parts like Spohn rear control arms, Little Shop spherical bushings, tubular control arms all help too.  IMO, the biggest improvement comes from stiffer springs and decent sway bars.  These cars came from the factory with very soft springs and a low roll center, which is not a good combo for a good handling car.

FWIW, I run Moog CVPI springs, 160 in/lb rear springs, Biltstein shocks, addco sway bars, spherical strut rod bushings, and poly rear suspension bushings.  The car handles excellent with those upgrades.
