I have a 302 crate engine that's been sitting but never started. It
has an HEI distributor on an aftermarket intake manifold. I'm unable to
fit a heater hose fitting next to the big distributor. There might be a
fitting / nipple out there that will fit, but this unlabeled manifold
has ports on the rear that I'm thinking could be going into a coolant
channel. Anyone know if I could relocate that nipple to the rear of the manifold and
have the pressure for the heater core? (I can't seem to upload images...maybe because I'm on a Mac) |

Windsor heater hoses both come off the water pump and connect to the heater core. the connection from the thermostat housing to the water pump is a thermo bypass, is that the hose that won't fit?

Thanks for the response. The one that won't fit is the 90 degree nipple coming from a port on the manifold a couple inches behind the thermostat housing. I have the short hose going from the water pump to the thermostat housing for the thermo bypass. I think the other nipple on the water pump will be connecting a long hose to the heater core, and the other long hose will go from the heater core to that port on the manifold a couple inches behind the thermostat housing. Do you mean I could just plug that port and cap the nipple on the thermostat housing and have the two nipples on the water pump go to and from the heater core?

If you take the cap off the distributor, does it let the elbow be straight up to have the threads mesh together? It looks like when it's screwed in, the top of the elbow would be below the bottom of the cap. If that's the case, then pull the distributor, screw in the elbow until it's tight but the hose nipple points away from it and one of the six flat sides (instead of one of the six points) faces toward the distributor body, and then put the distributor back in. It might limit your range of timing adjustment, so hopefully your timing is set where you want it already, but it seems easier than trying to get that rear crossover to work, since the ports look to me like they're smaller than the one by the thermostat.

That rear coolant passage is not made into any later intakes by design. But it should work for the heater core purpose if you need to. There are several different OEM coolant pipes made to connect up front like that, and mounts to the intake with an outlet at the back. The Explorer 302 was the last production SBF, you should be able to find those still if you hunt for a while. I don't know what the height is of that metal swivel fitting where it goes into the intake. Hopefully some are shorter than others.

pic of your water pump, are there 2 heater connection nipples on it? what intake is that? the plugs at the rear will give coolant that has only gone through the block, not the heads and will not be fully hot for the heater core. some engines like Pontiacs connect the heater core to the rear of the passenger side head, once the engine is fully warmed it won't make a difference Edited by Rockatansky - 27-October-2024 at 11:41AM |

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. That 90 I have won't fit under the distributor when it's threaded in. The rear port does turn out to be a smaller thread diameter than the fitting but I might be able to find a smaller one if necessary. I don't see a brand name on the intake. I did get a straight fitting that fits, but will still limit timing adjustment. I found a more compact 90 on amazon and though it's $35! I might order it. Here's a couple pics, including one for Rockatansky of the water pump. |
