Hello,
I'm writing you from Paris, France, I own a 73 fastback Gran Torino 351 2bbl Cleveland engine. Yesterday I had a first symptom of the end of my starter (I had to turn the key 3 times to crank it up). So I'm going to buy a new one in order to avoid the real issue ! Any recommandations I saw those new like mini/tiny/lighter starter, looks good but in the other hand it cost a lot of money, so I'll be reading all your advice. Thanks in advance and have a good day. |

Hi. Unless you have space issues due to aftermarket headers or something else, any reason not to just install a stock style replacement?

Hello thanks for your reply @Wayner315 you mean get a remanufactured starter ? I'm ok with it, just to know if there's a better option.

Gotcha. I think most people install mini or smaller started due to space savings, or for weight reduction. Someone else will probably have some insight here soon.

Does your car have an automatic transmission? If so, you can use a stock starter for any 1992-2001 Ford product with the 5.0L or 5.8L V8 and automatic transmission. In 1992, Ford switched from the regular starter to the PMGR mini starter, which will give you the upgrade you want for a lot less money. I'm using one for a 1995 Mustang on my 351 Cleveland. Toward the end of that run, Ford made an improvement to one of the connectors to better resist corrosion, so maybe order one for a 2000 Explorer with 5.0 V8 to be sure you have that improved connector.
The solenoid is located on the starter itself on the newer mini starters. The large wire running from the fender-mounted solenoid to the motor, you'll replace with a smaller wire that hooks to the small terminal on the starter-mounted solenoid. You'll then run a large-gauge wire directly from battery power to the large terminal on the starter-mounted solenoid. If you have a manual transmission, it gets more complicated because the size of your flywheel makes a difference.

Thanks again @Wayner315 ok so a mini starter to your opinion is not necessarily more efficient in terms of mechanics, it is more about weight or saving space ?
Because if it's only for a matter of weight or space I don't mind, I'm looking for something reliable and efficient. |

Thanks so lot for your well detailed answer @Inkara 1
I have an automatic transmission, ok very interesting i'm going to search for those last one you explained me (on 2000 explorer cars) or maybe get the same as yours, I'll search on rockauto then. Have a nice evening @Inkara1 ! |

you're aware of the wiring changes that Inkara mentioned, or did you miss that? you'll need a new battery positive cable and re-work the solenoid S terminal wire from the fender solenoid to the starter solenoid. some people have problems with the starter continuing to crank after letting off the key. IDK what the issue is there i haven't done the mini starter swap yet myself but you should be aware of what's involved and the possible issues before you order a starter that causes you more issues. have you inspected all the wires / cables cleaned all the connections? many times the starter is fine and the real problem is a simple maintenance issue

I've never had that issue with mine. I wired it up as I described. So it basically has redundant solenoids. I could see how it might get confusing if you try to take the fender-mounted solenoid out of the equation, but otherwise it seems pretty easy. I'd also wonder if it would extend the life of the fender-mounted solenoid because you're not running much current through it.

Just my personal experience that a starter is a starter is a starter and I wouldn't expect any particular stock style starter from a reputable seller to be much more or less reliable than another. Unless you find a cheap junky Chinese option out there, like anything. (Also, assuming you've ruled out the solenoid as being a part of the issue?)

@Rockatansky @Inkara1 @Wayner315
Thanks so lot for all your replies ! I drove it on Saturday, Sunday and Monday, it started right up, no problem, my friends who helped me to fix issues on my 73 Torino had a look on Monday, especially to all the connections around the starter, solenoid, etc. Everything seems fine, they told me maybe it was humidity...
I brought almost 10 years ago my starter in order to be remanufactured, so it should have a few years in front of him I guess ! But if it happens again, I'll buy another one for sure. Thanks again to all ! Jessie. |
