    Posted: 16-October-2011 at 6:15PM
I have a 70 Torino with the 8 inch rear end. I want to install an inspection plug on the back side of the housing so I have to drill a hole and tap it. Do I need anything on the backside to support the plug or will it seal enough when I tap it with a pipe tap. Reason for doing this is I don't have access to a 9 inch right now and have a 3.25 gear set out of a 63 Fairlane,  It doesn't have the fill plug on the third member.

I'm going through this with my 77 Cougar. I was just going to bolt it together, leave an axle out, jack the car up so that axle was in the air, and fill the axle through the axle tube, lol.

I wouldn't just tap the housing.i believe I've seen a weld in plug/sleeve assy.or I know it was either jeep or a dodge product that used a rubber push in plug.

Tighten it down until it snaps and then back it off a half turn!

Doesn't yours have a "fill" on the center section either?

The only other thing I could do is drill and tap the center section housing so its normal like the regular ones or 67' and up. The axle housing seems a little thing to just tap and put in a plug though.  Thought about filling it through the vent tube too but that might take awhile.

OEM does.. but the center chunk I have from a 79 'swap meet rear axle with rear discs' does not.

How did you know when you had enough? Did you add a pre-measured amount or...?

The housing is too thin to tap. Can't even get one thread in it.

What about one of those "add-a-drain' kits they sell for transmission pans.. Could do the housing with it on the back.

I checked with my jeep bud and he says jeep uses a rubber plug.IMO this is the fastest/ cheapest way to go.
