    Posted: 10-October-2012 at 4:46AM
I'm starting to work on a '71 Torino GT convertible (351 Cleveland) that I bought 3 years ago. The guy before me pulled the original wheels and replaced them with the Magstar type. I have an original picture of the car with the Dog Dish hubcaps and trim rings and it looks great. My question is this... The spare tire looks to be a 14" x 6" steel wheel with a date code of August of '70. Car was built September of '70. The car came with F70x14 tires from the factory. Can anybody enlighten me on what the wheel size should be? 14"x7"? Would the spare be a different size than the the other 4? Thanks!!

They had both sizes. I have a set of the original 14 X 7 wheels with the caps and rings just going to waste in my garage...

Would that be in your garage next to all the Sawzall remains? :)

so you can get an idea of what each wheel width will do to the shape of the tire,

F70-14

tread width 6.67"
cross section 8.30"
outer diameter 26.24"

G70-14

tread width 6.92"
cross section 8.75"
outer diameter 26.82"

and you can use something like this conversion to reverse engineer the wheel width

there's no telling what can be in the trunk over 40 years later?

agree on the poverty caps, timeless Muscle look Thumbs Up i'm going with the look with a set of 15x8 mopar cop wheels with the 6 oval slots, chrome baby moon nut covers, maybe/not trim rings?

& i know there's a not a lot of room in the 71 wheel tubs but i think you might even get 8" wide wheels on there if you want to? Ha! have you seen what steel wheels are going for lately? Wacko

there's a Mopar stamped steel wheel that came stock on a Ramcharger, 15x8 & the right lug pattern for Ford too

15" tires are getting hard to find, 14's even harder and they just look small besides,
i'd jump up to 15's for sure

Are you sure they are Magstars and not Magnums?
Since you have a date code on the spare and it matches perfectly with the build date, I'm going to assume it is original to the car. That means all 5 rims were 14x6 from the factory. You would have to measure that rim to be sure on size.

Where are the date codes on the wheels? The only numbers I saw on my 14 X 7 wheels are on the area around the lugnuts and say 4MG or 1MG as near as I can tell. Maybe a 0 or 8 or S as the first number. I do know it does have the MG designation. I do have a set of 14 X 6 that came off my '72 wagon.

Timing of this discussion topic - could not have been better!!!!!!

A) Father-in-law just had bodywork and paint shot on his 1970 Torino (fastback - non GT).    Went back with the original green on it.   The guy "cut and buffed it" very nicely.
B) Interior is stock black
C) He wants "shiny mags" (his words) on it.
D) Question #1:   What is the backspacing on these Torino's?
E) Question #2: How much tire can fit in the rear of these Torino's?   (no wheel tubs)
F) Question #3:  He liked the late model Mustang Bullet Mags (but wanted me to find out)

May I ask you guys widome and expertise?    What can he fit in there?
1970 Torino 351c-2v. It's the mid year sports coupe. Bone stock.   Trying to get the old girl back on the road

The 1MG would be the date code. 1 for 1971, I have no idea what the "M" is (maybe the supplier) and the G is for the month - July.
