Hi fellows, new guy here with a question. I haven't dealt much with the Ford big block engines but I have with the Clevelands and small blocks. I have a C9VE 429 and I want to know if it's necessary to use the valley pan on this engine or will the regular intake gaskets be sufficient. I know the pan keeps hot oil off the bottom of the intake but is this recommended for street application? Thanks!

I use one on mine DOVE head/block, I purchased the valley pan that closes off the heat crossover from heads to intake. I helps keep the heat off of the carbs float bowls. Been on there about 6 months no issues with leaks, either vacuum or water. The valley pan isn't required for street use, I just like keeping as much heat away from the carb as possible. Good luck. Yeah, It's a Hybrid...It burns gas and tires.

That was my thoughts too but I also thought that the additional heat from not using a pan would be good for the fuel/air mixture in the intake runners but maybe not with a bbf. Did you get your pan from Summit?

I just went to my local Advanced Auto Parts and got mine. I ordered a Fel-pro MS 96044 valley pan set, supposed to be for a 460 using LP gas(no heat crossover/blocked off heat crossover). If you can't find this part number you can order Fel-pro MS 96018, which has the crossover port and either install as-is or fab up some plates to block the ports. Here you can see images of each, http://fme-cat.com/LiveImages/Medium/FL/MS96018_TOP.jpg  &  http://fme-cat.com/LiveImages/Medium/FL/MS96044_TOP.jpg . , I originally installed my intake with regular gaskets, but went with MS 96044 after having problems with fuel boiling in the bowls of the Holley carb. Using this valley pan solved this problem. Good luck. Todd

Thanks Todd, I really appreciate the help and part numbers and I'm going with the blocked crossover pan myself. Is your ignition timing retarded because that will cause fuel to boil with the excessive engine heat created?

No, due to compression & cam specs,  I am running 17' btdc @ idle with 34-36' total before vacuum advance. After installing a wideband I found the carb was running way too lean at part throttle, then once the engine got to temp the Edelbrock 1726 mechanical fuel pump would start to vapor lock adding more problems. All fixed now though, Wink. Todd

BTW, welcome to the forum, always glad to see a new member join.  One other thing, this post really should have been put in the 429-460 section just above this one Embarrassed, no biggie though.
