I have only seen the Ford built boxes installed into full size cars and truck models, never a Saginaw box(as far as the early to late 70's go). I have heard the Ford built box is the stronger of the 2 boxes, it is physically larger than a Saginaw box. Even my '82 F250 4x4 used the Ford box. Now in our '72-'79 intermediates, I have seen both PS boxes used of course, with about 2/3's being the Ford built box. Really not sure the reason that Ford went with the GM steering division's PS gearbox, maybe Bendix(the alleged builders of the Ford PS gearbox) was falling short on quota. Kinda like, why did Ford/Lincoln/Mercury models use the GM sourced A6 a/c compressor on the full sized platforms? Or why Ford never installed a Sag PS pump(AFAIK, always in a full size-never in an intermediate) and PS gearbox together in one vehicle(would have made finding/having the correct pressure line A LOT easier) Ouch.

Yeah, It's a Hybrid...It burns gas and tires.

I finally called Lares Corp and told them about the original pitman arm not fitting on the 841 steering box sector shaft and it fits too tight, barely slides onto the splines and not being able to fully thread the nut on.
The tech stated that it is a known problem on there end and to call where I purchased the unit and have another one sent out to me. So they have been rebuilding some boxes and installing sector shafts with larger diameters by mistake. I called the place I purchased from and they are refunding me as soon as I send the steering box back. They also said that they were not aware of the problem so if I ordered another one with the same part # then it's possible that I would end up with the same problem again.
You cannot eyeball the difference. So, I'm going to order it at a parts store counter and bring my pitman arm along to make sure it fits properly before I take it home.

That scenario would really make wonder about their quality control......sheesh. Hopefully it will all work out, definitely a good idea to bring in your pitman arm for fit-a-ment.

It’s been a while, I was not aware the 841’s had shaft issues.

Keep in mind Lares is also building brand new 841’s now.

Best thing to do is call them directly.

I know I am necro-posting an older thread, but I did have a question based on what was posted here earlier. I have one of the original Ford steering boxes and power steering pump, and I have a Gates high pressure hose #355760 that is supposed to be here tomorrow. (Having read about avoiding the other brands, I hunted around for a new Gates hose with this part number off of eBay).

What I wanted to confirm is that this IS the correct high pressure hose for the original pump and steering box, correct? I saw where the earlier post was using it with a different P/S pump and just wanted to confirm that I had the correct one. Thanks.

I’d have to check.

The Saginaw pumps take a different host end on the pressure line to the box.

Ford Thompson pumps take a different fitting.

On the road this weekend, so not able to check part numbers from my notes.

My build thread has info on the hose for Saginaw bow with 841/saginaw PS pump.

I don't have the gates part numbers hand, but as long as your ordered the line for the Ford box and have a Thompson PS pump, it is the correct part.  See the lisitings here on RockAuto, but like I said, Gates is not listed:

Personally, I'd stay away from Edelmann brand hoses. I was NOT impressed with their quality at all. Too long for 72-76 Torino applications.

So I had to dig through the 20 pages of my build project thread.

When I swapped from worn out Thompson to the newer Ford style pump with plastic reservoir (was trying to see if swapping away from the Thompson design due to my RPM's I spin) I used a Gates 355760 with the 841 Saginaw box.

I remember this deal, because I had a 1974 Q code ranchero PS pulley on there which was a much deeper groove and larger OD to slow down the pump's RPM's a small bit, factory under drive pulley I suppose you could say.

This was back when I was still dealing with stock V belts, and fatigue cracked alternator bracket.

Looking back to posts Jan 2017, I started updating to the CVF Beast belt drive. Saginaw pump.

For the life of me, I know there was an adapter from the port on the saginaw PS pump to the PS line that came from CVF that screwed into the (Ford Corporate type 2) Ford pump
