Topic: Magnum 500 WheelsPosted: 27-August-2024 at 2:37AM |
Have Magnum 500 wheels on my 72 GT but they are all rusted and pitted. Paper work says that the tire are "F70-14". I kinda figure that it is cheaper to replace then refurbish. Was thinking of going 15 inch wheels but am confused about back spacing. Vehicle is a manual disc brake. Any ideas on which wheels mfg are better then the other and where to purchase from?

I have been getting my Magnum 500s from Wheel Vintiques for years. Always had good luck. No issues with shipping or quality of the wheels.

backspace is the distance the wheel extends inward toward the center of the car from the mounting surface of the rotor or drum. example; an 8" wide wheel with a 4" backspace will have the wheel center exactly in the middle of the hoop. and 'offset' will be Zero. sometimes backspace is referred to as 'offset', this is how far the wheel center is from the middle of the hoop and can be positive or negative. most newer cars use negative offset, the wheel center is way out near the edge of the wheel. if you're not more confused now that when i started this img should get you there, a quick sketch i did for my own wheel selection ![]() |

There are lots of choices for repro Magnum 500s and similar styled wheels. The Wheel Vintiques are the got to, for a steel repro. There are other companies, like Scott Drake too, but they seem to be the same supplier as Wheel Vintiques. While not identical to OEM, they are the closest, with the main differences being the repros have shiny chrome spokes instead of the brushed finish on OEM wheels, and they are welded rather than riveted. For the quality of the Wheel Vintiques Magnum 500s, I'd say they are just ok. I bought my set about 15 years ago, and they have held up ok, but they live in garage and are waxed. Some members here reported rusting on the chrome finish. They are definite not the same quality as my OEM 1972 wheels. I had issues with the repro wheels being straight and true. One of mine needed to be replaced a few years ago when I remounted the tires I was told by the shop it was out of round. I ordered a replacement from Summit and it was also out of round. Luckily Summit was awesome and replaced it, and I finally got a straight one. Being lug centric they are tricky to get a really good balance, especially if you go with the wider than stock wheels like I did. The 15 x 7s seem to balance better. There are some hub centric aluminum Magnum 500 repros that would likely be lighter, straighter and balance easier. If I weren't such a stickler for that OEM look, I would have replaced my wheel vintiques wheels. The legendary wheels look good, and pretty close to stock. I just don't if they Torino Center caps would work with them. For sizing, if you go to a 15x7, a 4.25" backspace works. 15x8, a 4.5" backspace works. The Legendary aluminum wheels don't offer 15 x 8 with 4.5" backspacing, but the 4.75" might work too based on looking at my wheels and the spacing around them. American Racing has a set too, they are further from stock. I know one member used them and reported they were excellent and balanced a lot better than the steel wheels. I hope this helps. The tire thread has tons of info in it too, but ask away if you have more questions. |

Decided to go with Wheel Vintiques Magnum 500 in a 15x7. The people I get my tire and wheels from say that Wheel Vintiques is currently out of stock and may not have them to January(and it sounds like a big maybe). Tire and wheel people are offing me 15x8 wheel. Will it rub on the front? And what size tire does the collective think would be used? Vehicle has F70-14 on it now and 52 year old suspension.

I found when I purchased my rims from Wheel Vintiques that they take a long time. They weren't very responsive with updates, either. Once I received them, the quality was good. They do provide their rims to several large providers, so the sales lead told me my order was behind one of the existing orders. -Chris

I got my 15x8" Magnum 500 wheels from Wheel Vintiques, through YearOne and Summit, 2 pairs. That was last year and they took near 7-6 months each. I have seen a few members here use 255/60's on the front, and 275/60's on the rear. They say they fit well, and there were pictures in their threads to see. I expect they will fit, the 15x8's are a 4.75" back spacing I think, or was it 4.5", I forgot. These sizes look great on the wheels, I expect them to wear fairly evenly, depending on the suspension parts.

I run 15x8's on my car front and rear. No issues with clearance. I run 245/65-15s all the way around which are a little shorter than 255/60-15's. It would also be closer in diameter, but still taller, than the original F70-14 tires. Personally I love the look of 15x8's all around. It gives the Torino an aggressive stance with the wide front tires. If you suspension is all stock, with the new tires, you might want to look at freshening it up a bit down the road. At least make sure it's got decent shocks and check out your bushings. The stock suspension is pretty soft on these cars, unless you have the upgraded HD or Competition suspension options. A simple upgrade would be to add Addco sway bars front and rear.

I loved the look of mine but they all ran with a little wobble no matter how well they were torqued. I tried everything and always had issues.
