Does anyone know what size the factory speaker was in the door panels of a 74-76 Mercury Cougar /Montego
My car wasn’t built with them , though I can see a slight indent in the door panels where they would be if so equipped. How hard are the factory speaker grills to find or is there a better option for speakers in that location ? Thanks much ! Need more wattage in the cottage !!!

The factory option would be 5 1/4" for door speakers, the cars should have the hole and the indents for drilling mounting holes. The hard part will be the door panels, the speaker grilles, how you choose and mount them. Many door panels are not flat, the plastic contoured type are mostly curved at the corners where the speakers need to go. My 72 Gran Torino had the flat type of door panel, which was easy to add speakers to. I placed 5 1/4" speakers in the front, but I think a 6.5" might fit too if you can mount a grille to the panel. I also added rear speakers in my doors, the placement was great to aim into the back area. That saved me from running wires to the rear deck lid and using 6x9's(I was a high school kid, that was the cheapest way out). That learning trial helped me later, the Ranchero has no space for rear speakers, I'll be trying to make something fit into my Sport door panels.

Wonder if there’s a pre drilled hole in the door and door jamb for wiring on non speaker cars ??

I'd bet there is, especially in Fords going later into the 70's. My 72 I don't think I drilled any hole in the door jamb.

I’ll have to wander out to the garage and take a look . There are lots 5 1/4” speakers to choose from , so that’s good . And it looks like quite a few speaker grills that would look semi period correct if I can’t find the factory grills

Did that year have a dash speaker as the AM option? If so, you may be able to add a 4x10 speaker with dual channel voice coils and single main speaker. I added one on my '69 and with 6x9's in back it kicks out pretty well. Using a re-done factory radio with 4 outputs and AUX in with FM, like 35W a channel, I think.

There is a dash speaker in it , and I updated the 6x9 in the rear package tray . The front is probably the original speaker , tinny sounding would be a good adjective for that one ! Getting access to that speaker is a nightmare on my 75 Montego so I think my best bet is some 6” speakers in the kick panels . That would negate cutting mint door panels , and running wires through door jambs . I see someone reproduces the kick panels for my car so I thing I could make something work pretty well in that area . Would have to keep it a shallow mount on the drivers side as the sweep of the emergency brake pedal would contact something mounted on top of the kick panel
Anyone have pictures of speakers mounted down in the kick panel area on 74-76 cars ???

Just an FYI , there are NO holes in the doors or jambs for wires on my car . So that makes the decision a bunch easier for speaker location :::: kick panels

About 6 months ago I had found a NOS D3OZ-18819-A, which is the Door speaker kit, contains the speakers, harnesses (including bellows), grills (missing from my kit), hard ware and instructions. Purchased it for my car, not sure if the holes are in the door, but they will be. :)
I see on ebay, someone has listed a similar kit: D5OZ-18819-A, it appears almost exactly the same as mine, I'd even bet its the same with different connectors. These were kits for dealers to add door speakers. Good luck! |
