Swapping a T-5 into my '72 wagon to replace the previous 3 speed manual. Does anyone know the difference in length and an appropriate transmission mount for this swap?

I had always thought that the 1970 through 1973 ford 3 speed manual transmissions and the 1970 through 1973 ford 4 speed manual transmissions, have the same exact case. I could be wrong about this though. Somebody please correct me if I am wrong... The main case measures 12" in length. There were also three different optional tail shafts available on both of these transmissions. The tail shaft sizes are: 14", 14 1/2", and 17", depending on the application. With that being said, there is a diagram below that compares the dimensions between the 4 speed transmissions and the T5 transmissions.

I have also heard of the possibility that the T5 transmission pad (where the transmission mount attaches to) might be located lower than the ford 3 speed manual and 4 speed manual transmission pad.
So there might be the possibility that the transmission cross member from the 3 speed manual transmission, might have to be modified to fit the T5 transmission.

I put in the T-5. Pad height is the same. Moved cross-member and re-drilled the frame to avoid any fabbing on the trans mount.

That is great news. I wonder if the existing driveshaft end can be used and how much the driveshaft will need to be shortened from the existing wagon 3 speed shaft. Also, once fixed, will this driveshaft currently mated to the 8 inch rear end swap over to a 9 inch flange?
Thanks for all your help! |
