Ive got a 78 Thunderbird that has a 9" with rear disk brakes and all four wheels are 5 on 5 lug spacing. Could it have come this way from the factory? What could the rearend and front disks come off of? Lincoln? truck?

The lincoln Mark series had the big bolt pattern and could be optioned with rear disk brakes. The rear axle will bolt into the T bird and I think the front rotors fit on the T bird spindles.

According to my 78 Ford Buyers Digest, 4 wheel disc's were not available on the Cougar/T-Bird.
Of course that info came out at the beggining of the model year, so that might have changed later in the model year. So yes, someone else installed them. As an intersting side note, if your 78 Cougar/T-Bird has the 400, it either has the trailer towing package or was destined for the California market. 49 state cars could not get the 400 without the trailer tow package.

Shouldn't have been available, but it's a 'bolt on' swap.
