Hi Guys. Just in here snooping around to get a feel of what I'm up for. Have just bought a 78 Ranchero out of Washington and trying to get her down to American Samoa. Can't wait. Cheers

Very nice, and I see the custom console too. I have two different consoles in my 73's, one is an unknown that somebody put in it with power window switches also. Is that a 400 engine, or a 351M? It has Cleveland valve covers, so it's probably one of those two.

I thought that the H in the VIN meant 351W or C. I hope its a Cleveland.
Maybe some one smarter than me could pitch in.

I'm going by the valve covers, which also have a decal on them stating which engine it is. The Windsor uses six bolts on the VC's, while all the Cleveland heads take eight VC bolts. The Windsor will have easier to come by parts in general. Keeping it basically like stock with carb and those accessories, either is reasonable to work with. Modifying to change the front dress etc, or any form of EFI would be easier with the W, the C is a rare thing to see with modern accessories or EFI etc.

Thanks very much Don. Would the Marti report give a concrete conclusion?
From the plate... C4 trans... What does the Axle - 1 mean?? Appreciate the help and the warm welcome. Cheers...

The axle code being a number, means it doesn't have an LS diff. Those were letter codes for the most part. The engine itself looks original and stock, but it could have been swapped for other 70's engines that also would look about the same. The VIN tag does tell you what the original engine was.

Engine code "H" will be 351M or 351W in your car.
Valve covers are 351M. Ford used the same code for two entirely different engines at the same time. Cleveland went extinct after 1974 in US/Canada.
351M in stock form is a decent "grunt" torque engine. "W" code trans is a C4 "1" code axle is 2.50 Ratio open Diff. (At least when it left the factory.) |

Thanks Big Bird... So from what i can gather... A set of pistons and a crank out of a 400 and I'll get another 50 cubes...? Hmmmm... Seems logical.
I do have a 460 sittin in the shop that's been mildly tampered with. S'pose that'll slot in with little difficulty. Im reading a few header issues maybe??? I guess the C4 might get a bit internally twisted bolted to a 460 tho...? Or should i find a C6 to rekit and throw in?? Thanks for your help guys... Very much appreciated!!!

Nice Ranchero! Instead of going to 400, you could always got to a 444 stroker:
The 460 would be a good option too. The hard part will be finding motor mounts. The factory mounts are getting tough to find and the factory style mounts are not made in aftermarket. Crites makes some motor mounts, but then you must also use their headers because the engine does not sit in the same. I am not a transmission guy, but I am sure a C4 could be build to handle the 460 with the parts available in the aftermarket. |

They usually did not mate C4 transmissions with a 351M/400 because those used the big block bolt pattern. So a C6 (code U) or an Fmx trans would have been used with those engines. So unless there was an engine swap I would say the engine would be a 351W/C4 combo.

There were C4 351Ms out there. Back in the 80s they were popular because the trans can be built up significantly stronger and will bolt to a 429/460. Much lower HP/Torque loss thru the trans than a C6.

Ditto, I have heard of the C4 made for a big block, but I never read about what they came in.
