Hey Everyone...lovng time reader, first time posting.

I've enjoyed reading these forums and learned a ton over the years and I'd like to contribute some more content on my project that this website made possible. Thank you in advance!

I was lucky to get car 17 years ago when i was 15. It a was my first car and in good "surivor" condition. I learned to drive in it and did very little work on it in high schoo and college.

1973 Gran Torino Sport
351 4V, 4spd, 3.50 open diff

Over the last few years, I redid the suspension down to the bushings, Spohn rear upper control arms. Orignially the upgraded rear suspensoin, but bushings aren't available anymore. CVPI 1/2 coil chopped, Addco sway bar up front, and udpated shocks...not bilstein but much apprecaited update. Refurbished front calipers and pad.

Next real steps for me is to rebuild the 4sp...rebuild kit is in hand, but once i open it...i'm pretty sure itll need synchros...I also want to do a Truetrac...and wondering if 31 spline is necesary for a street motor?...

Wheles and tires will need to be soon just due to age of current tires...long term is 351c build and interior/trunk project.

Welcome! 351C, 4 speed  is a pretty cool car to have.

As to your diff question, I love the trutrac and I don't see any reason for going up to a 31 spline the 28 spline is just fine for street duty. Unless your plans are to build a stroker in future I'd say save the money.

yeah 28 should be fine and adding the trutrac will spread the shock load evenly to both axlesWink

Welcome. I also plan for the True Trac, and the thought of which splines came up too. I'm aiming to add ABS, which will depend on how possible an axle will be with the ABS rings. If I have to go that path, for me a 31 spline axle won't cost anything more.

Check out the axles before deciding, often the old ones could use replacements anyway.

Welcome to the forum! I have upgraded you to a full member so you have full forum privileges.  Post some pics when you have a chance. Very cool that you have a 4 speed car and it sounds like you did some good suspension upgrades. I agree that the 28 spline should be fine for the street.

Welcome aboard. Nice looking machine. Are you rebuilding the toploader yourself?

Thanks! She's great and stoked to still have her. The plan is to do it myself with a lil help from a shop on the steps that require a press.

I'm not a mechanic by trade, but pretty handy and have a decent technical support structure...figured it would be worth an attempt to save a good amount on a reman...plus the satisfaction...should be worth it.

Any suggestions or guidance?

I'm thinking this would be a good time to do the trans and diff around the same time then get some miles on the car...and a couple of black lines left here and there. The diff i'd rather get it to a shop to do..
Thanks,
Matt

With the help from the forum here...over the last few years I did the followinp updates...i should have some photos somewhere to add for the progress.

I'll call it an efficiency/reliability update..
-3g Alternator update
-LARE steering box, powersteering pump, linkage
-cluch fan, harmonic balance
-Thermostat, timing chain and other wear items in the accessory drive.

Other than that...just a 2.5in exhaust with some flowmaster Delta 40s...
Thanks,
Matt

Thats a sharp looking car! Rebuilding the top loader sounds like a good project. Take good pictures of the way your shift rods are before tearing it down.

Very nice looking car. Was in San Diego way back. The two trees in the background caught my eye. The palm tree next to what looks like an oak  with no leaves. Winter in Southern California.
