Is there supposed to a knob of some sort on it? I have tried to google photos, but nothing really comes up.

My car is a 4sp. Is there a ‘lock’ on the transmission case? I havent seen any. Is it eletronic or manual? There is a blue wire going to the top of the transmission case, but I cant see from beneath where it goes and what it does.

I will look to see if my manual column has one. I recall there being a button to push while turning the key on to prevent a passenger from getting everyone killed while driving. Is this what I am thinking about?

Yup.
Thats the one. I had that on my '72. I couldn't start the car  unless I pushed that. It makes for a great anti-theft device.  Its so simple that newer drivers can't figure it out.

There is supposed to be knob on that button. That is a floor shift column and the button is the key release. You need to push the button in order to turn the key from "off" to "lock" to remove they key. I have one on my LTD ll. It's not electrical...it operates a rod in the switch mechanism to turn the key.

Just a note, the floor shift column of that era were non-tilting.

Yup. Had to push that button to start the car and again to get the key to turn back so I could take the key out.Couldn't turn the key in or out of lock unless that was pushed.

I remember that too with my 72 GT, I sometimes figured I'd try to correct that. The 73 I bought recently doesn't have that, and my other one will have a 1993 column.

The shifter park lock is the critical feature, keep that and/or make it better.

Wasn't supposed to stop you from starting, just a way to bypass the shifter interlock on cars that didn't have a column shift, lazy fix from engineering.

The pic John posted above show the little black knob that goes on there.  All floor shift cars, auto or manual transmission had this feature.  So it isn't that uncommon to the 1972-79 midsized cars.  It was there to prevent someone from being able to accidentally remove the key while the car was still driving.
