Hi forum. What did an original trunk mat for a 72 look like? Splatter, herringbone, one color…?
I need a mat for my 72……thanks.

The original trunk mat part is D2OZ 6545494-A which Ford listed as gray burtex but does not list the pattern.  Some listings show this part number was the gray herringbone, which is the one I used when I ordered a replacement. Although my car is full documented from new, one of the few parts that didn't survive was the original trunk mat, so I can't confirm this was correct.  My dad remembers it being gray, but he is not sure on the pattern, he thinks maybe splatter pattern (but he could be thinking of the trunk paint).   I suspect Ford may have used both.

It is an ACC mat..there was a paper from ACC in the box with the mat. Grey spatter…looks ok and quality (for 50usd) seems fine.

Vince are there cardboard 'fillers' that level off the edges of the trunk space where the trunk drop-off's dip down to meet the bottom of the quarters?

Pretty sure i have a couple of old gnarly ones that came with mine.... put them away for templates... also an after market trunk mat, which i'll dig out now that this thread has reminded me...

Yes, there were filler panels from the factory.  They make repros which are sold at several vendors. Here is one:
