I am trying to pinpoint details of my first car, a 1970 Torino that I owned from 1975 to 1981 or 1982. It was a two door, I think Medium Ivy Green (based on looking at color charts), had a black vinyl roof, with a green interior. It had a 351 Cleveland motor with an automatic transmission. I think it was a Brougham, but not sure. I have a (not real clear) photo but I guess I can’t post it yet as a newbie.
It appears in the photo that it had a bit of a “ledge” where the roof meets the rear quarter panel, so I’m thinking it wasn’t a Sportsroof. Can anyone help with this? Also, can anyone explain the difference between the Sportsroof and the regular roofline? Thanks! Thomas

Were there vinyl roof options for a fastback?

I have the illustrations showing side views of the various models downloaded from the internet. Based on that, and looking at photos of actual cars, it’s clear that the transition from the roof to the rear quarter panels are different. The Sportsroof is a smother shape, with only the slightest crease at the fender, which really doesn’t appear in many photos. The other roofline has a clear “ledge” running along the top of the fender where the roof starts. The C pillar of the Sportsroof is more narrow too, and the back seat window larger.
What I’m not sure of is the contour of the top as it meets the rear window. Is it the same, or a bit lower? Is the rear glass the same in both roofs? Logic would suggest that they are the same to facilitate tooling and engineering but I’m not sure. I overlayed one profile with another in Photoshop and they did appear to be the same but again I’m not 100% positive.

My thought as well. It would have killed the look of that sexy rear.

You guys are correct, there was no vinyl top available on the "sportsroof" fastback from the factory. It was only available on 4-Door Sedans, 2-Door Formal Hardtops and 4-Door Hardtops. See the 1970 option limitations on this page: |

The fastback roof slopes downward toward the backlight. The coupe roof stays more “flat” from front to back. Glass- while the windows are sort of close in size, they are not the same. The shop is different especially at the bottom.... formal roof : curves up toward the center Fastback: curves down toward the center
