trans;mission will only shift manually until the car has been running for awhile. WHen its first started and out in drive, you can hear a little spinning, but if we start out in 1st and shift our way up its ok....any ideas??
Thanks....Mike

Basics:
1- Fluid level? If the transmission is low, you may not go anywhere at all. My 1992 Explorer sport was the same way with a very tired transmission.
If low, go to a autoparts store or walmart and get TYPE F fluid. Do not toss in marcon/dextron fluid, search out for TYPE F.
I don't care what the parts geeks at any regular place says, ATF is for new cars. I use TYPE F and nothing else in a 70's ford.
2-I by no means am an automatic trans expert, but I know in the past when guys have had issues on Torinos, some times the vacuum modulator is going out. This is generally the case if the trans does not want to shift correctly, of seems like it's searching for gear.
3-condition of the fluid?
Could be she is due for a rebuild possibly?

x2, Eliteman has this one pegged. I'd be willing to bet on low fluid level.

try a little brake fluid (like 1/8" cup)poured into the trans. it helped me w/ a similar issue and has worked for several years now. it has conditioners in it that help seals and such. |

So does ATF seal conditioner. Never heard of the brake fluid trick, not sure I'd try it on my own vehicle when ATF seal conditioner can be found at the auto parts store.

Brake fluid is what used car dealers do to cars with slipping transmissions to make them drive for a few hundred miles so they can get rid of the car. Don't do it. It will only make things worse. Brake fluid is hygroscopic and will suck up all the moisture in your transmission and contaminate the fluid with it. Not to mention the corrosiveness will cause rapid additional wear. Sure the clutches grab better and the car becomes more drivable, but it's a temporary fix while the fluid eats up every friction surface it comes in contact with.

I put brake fluid (about 2 table spoons) in 3 1/2 years ago. It was slipping bad enough when cold that i could barely get out of the neighborhood. After brake fluid, it stopped slipping immeadiately. Changed the fluid 2 1/2 years ago and it started slipping days later. Put more brake fluid in and it hasn't slipped a bit since. Car is daily driven, 400 c6. Cheaper then a re-build. |

Btw, I beat on the car mercilessly. I shift always manually, up and down, barking the tires, holding 1st gear till the engine screams (@3800 lol), foot to the floor all the time, punching it in 2nd just for the hell of it all the time. Always when cold and hot. Waiting for the tranny to die so that i have excuse to put in '71 429 w/ cam and ported heads, as well as 3speed toploader galaxie trans. |

I hope this is the only time I ever have to say this here, BUT... YOU'RE DUMB AS HELL!!! As for the OP, check the fluid (if there is any to check) to see if it smells burnt or looks brownish. If it is either brown or smells like burnt then you should most likely change out the old fluid and change the filter. This will be a rather messy job but it will give you a baseline to work with. Also don't forget to drain the fluid from the torque converter by removing the small access cover located just behind the oil pan, bolted to the bell housing. Once that access cover is off you will need to rotate the motor by hand until a small hex bolt comes around, that bolt is the converter drain plug. Good luck! |

many / most converters don't have a drain plug but it's good to check
the brake fluid trick has been around longer than i have, and if you don't use too much and swell the seals inside out, it very well could get that trans through for lots of years.
then again it could be that the trans has seen too many heat cycles and needs help
