exscuse the caps lock but i wanted to know if the rear axle in the 79 ltd II was 31 or 28 spline. if it helps its a 351m with c5 from the factory

Should be 28 spline unless someones been in there or altered things.

no its never been apart but i wanna put 3.00 gears in it and get rid of the origonal 2.45 gears

If you find the tag on the axle, we can help decode it. There should be a metal tag with a code on it that is attached to one of the bolts holding the differential in.

You have 2.45 gears? I thought the tallest gears were 2.50...

I have a complete rear end from a '73 Montego GT with 3.00:1 gears available.
I could sell the thing whole or just the center section.
Heavy item will cost in shipping though. 
I could deliver to the Columbus swap meet in April or maybe Carlisle in June.
I see you are in Michigan.
I'm near Niagara Falls Ontario if that helps in any way.

No it's an open.

I have no use for it other than just spare parts to me. My car has 3.25 and I may go up to 3.5 but we'll see how it runs first. I'm a long way off having it done.
