I have just come across a e4od 4r100 for a big block. Basic measurements say it would fit but very snug. Has anyone put one in a torino? If so, how much tunnel modification was needed?

E40D is a huge tranny, mainly for trucks and SUV's. It's weighs a ton also. I'd build a AOD and I believe you can get a bellhousing adapter for it to bolt to a big block.

It's a monster. There's even a 4R110W for the powerstroke diesels. You'd still be better off building a nice AOD and cutting off the bell and mounting an Ultra Bell or something if you have to have overdrive with a 429/460 in a car.

I'm too conservative to do that, but if I had another 351M/400 powered midsize I'd either customize an AOD for it or run a built C4 and use a really pathetic highway gear like a 2.47 or 2.50!

Greg Petit on 460ford did an E4od in his 70-71 Torino.

He did have to cut the floor quite a bit.

I agree, the AOD would fit a bunch easier. Here is the catch, I would have to find one that would stand up to a built big block. That would cost me at least $2000. not including the bell housing conversion. I found 2 4r100 tranny's for $200! rebuilt for another $1000. I am way ahead in the money game. I would like to see how Greg did his install.

I put it up in the car and it is tight but I think I can get away with minimal floor mods. I will have to trim a few unimportant things off the transmission. Here are some pics of setting in the car without mods. I think that some "trimming down" would make it fit.

C6 and 4R100. major difference is in the rear. about 3 in larger in diameter

The trans can come up about 3 inches once I remove/modify the shift cable bracket.

This is one of the tabs sticking out of the passenger side that can be removed

The shift cable bracket.

another tab that can be removed

For the $, if you're not scared of stick, do a TKO. I did my F100 and I have zero regrets. The truck is a gazillion times more enjoyable than with the C6.
