got a little done tonight, finally got up the nerve to cut the hole in the floor. no turning back now! actually i cut it out neatly with the saw pictured, so it could be put back someday if needed.

Not trying to sound like Mom, but make sure you treat the edge of the metal where you cut with some primer and paint. Bare steel= rust!

Yeah they sure didn't take any care on the originals when cutting out the hole. All the ones I've had looked like they just blew through with a cutting torch or something. Very rough edges.
Buy your is so...... pretty!

Honestly, I've never considered a dash is that hard...pop off the steering wheel, leave all the hvac stuff alone, but loosen up the duct work, and unbolt the dash and just undo the connector at the firewall.
I guess I've taken one to many cars apart...

Pete...I ran into issues trying to source my starter, and of all things it ended up being a 88 bronco 5.8 efi 5 speed truck started.
Biggest thing I discovered-the length of the center stub for an automatic start will hit the bell house. |

thats it exactly, the nose cone is short on a manual car. I just went to the parts plus website and looked one up for a manual trans v8 73 torino and BAM, it was correct, and its installed.
(dont tell them i gave them back a rusty core from my chevy boat motor)

Yeah, on the tube, I forget what size, but it's a heavy wall aluminized steel pipe. I forget my primary size, need to check dynomax's web site.
What ever they listed the 351c with a c4 on a 70's Torino.
On that one, biggest headache was around the collector and welding it up. Had to get creative.
I have one left over if you need it.
My think I did was cut the #4 tube off the flange to allow easier working on the car. I had my front clip off at the time, and sat on the tire as I cut, trim, cut trim, cut trim and made a pattern.
I had to shape it to clear the Z bar. It's a bit close to the PS box, but no issues.
I did have to dimple the #3 tube with a ball peen to clear, but that's par for the course.
Wish I was closer, I'd try to come over and lend a hand.
I can't take any pictures, as my car is still at my dad's.

well, i butchered up a perfectly good set of headers today trying to make them work. they are past the point of no return today. i decided to run this header instead:
i am going to assemble the rest of the car with a pair of cast irons, and later i will use a set of Sanderson shortys that I found online, but they are $300 for a set. so we'll wait until next month.
Otherwise today i installed the transmission, shifter and made sure the parking brake was working and adjusted well.

let the record show: today i tried some mustang 5.0 shorty headers, they will not work with a factory z-bar either.

Hey Ramair did the 5.0 shortys fit other than the zbar? I'm just thinking for the ltd II someday.

Tom, I am pretty sure they don't.
With the 5.0 having a cable operated clutch, this isn't an issue.

The LTD II has an FMX so clutch issues aren't an issue for it. I'm just wondering if they clear the steering box. If I can ever put duals on it a cheap set of stock 5.0 headers would be a plus.

NEWS FLASH!!
i have found headers that will work!!
these are sanderson headers part #FF3. they closely mimic the shape of a stock ford manifold. Being sanderson, they are expensive. retailing for almost $300. Ready for the best part?? I found a set of new ones on ebay, for the dart/roush cylinder head so they have the wide bolt pattern. buy it now only $88!!!!
these headers are sweet, and clear everything. best of all i can put the header bolts in lazily with a 3/8 air ratchet. plenty of clearance.

I also took the greasy steering gear box out and put in a input and output seal. heres a shot from underneath with the gearbox out.
here is the gearbox done, but not cleaned up and painted yet. also is the parts plus kit i got to reseal it
so, i am ready to finish the rough assemble. I will remove the headers and get them painted and baked before the exhaust is done. i need to get some angled reducers also.
