Topic: In Search Of rear quarter panelsPosted: 01-September-2023 at 12:06AM |

Hi Guys,
I have just started a complete rebuild of a 1968 Torino GT convertible with BAD rear quarters. When I decided to buy her I looked online and the quarters appeared to be available.
After I got her home I tried to order them and found that the company that was reproducing them had closed. Several places still advertised them but when I ordered or contacted them they all gave me the same story. No longer available. I found some used one on Ebay but they are local pickup only. They are in Denver and I am in Michigan. The way I see it, if anybody, anywhere would know anything about where to find them they would be here. Thanks for your time |

There is a guy in St. Louis who posts on Craigslist with many 68-71 Torino parts and he shows a quarter for a formal roof. Hopefully he will deal, as prices seem high, though supply is tight on many of these items.

Thanks Schufitz for passing on the ad . His price is very high but it has a lot of attaching sheet metal.
I also found this site this morning. https://buntmanstorinocycloneparts.com/ he seems to have a lot of parts as well |

I have bought a few things from Buntman in the past. They do have a TON of hard-to-find parts and prices reflect that. I believe it's run by his family now as Larry passed away a few years back.

Thanks for the input. I have an email out to them. Another gentleman Torino owner told me they are hard to communicate with. But I will try !

Still no luck . Just a bunch of guys trying to rip me off with bogus parts. If anyone knows of a Reputable source, please contact me. I have some time as I have just started the tear down process. If push comes to shove the fastback quarters are available but at an extreme price ($2500 a pair) and a lot of wasted sheet metal.

Well some good news! The guys at Obsolete had one of the quarters I need. I believe he said it was the right one. They also told me they aren't reproduced any more. I now have 3 of the 4 in new sheet metal. Sooner or later I will come up with the last one

Cool. Which section are you missing? I usually surf for random Torino stuff a few days a week to kill some time as I'm retired now.
PS...what part of Michigan? The FCA is holding the national meet in Dearborn next summer. I trailered mine this year to TN and there were ~150 mid-size Fords of 62 to 79 vintage there. Edited by schufitz - 08-November-2023 at 9:00AM |

Thanks again schufitz for recommending Obsolete.
They had the left rear section of the quarter panel. I now need to locate the right rear section of the quarter panel. I asked if they could recommend somebody that might have it. They said there was a company called H&H that may have it, but I could not find a company by that name that handled old car parts. I live on the west side of the lower peninsula in about the middle. Small town USA called Ludington. I'm retired as well but I seem to get too many irons in the fire all the time

Well, I got some good news from American Muscle Car Parts. They had listed in their inventory on Ebay a set of 4 of the quarter panels for my Torino. So, I thought" What the L!". I ordered the whole set . I figured if I could get the one panel I need this way I'd resell the rest I have.
Predictably I soon got an e-mail that said the rear potion of the quarter panels were not available. I ,of course, canceled the order and expressed my displeasure over the fact they were advertising parts they did not have. This is the good news...The OWNER called me! He apologized for the problem! He went on to tell me he had owned a Torino like mine and was as disappointed as I was that the rear of the quarters were no longer available. He had done business with the company that had reproduced them and was in the process of purchasing their tooling. According to our conversation he should be able to have these back on the market late spring. At last light at the end of the tunnel

Did you ever find a solution? I haven't been able to find patch panels for the quarter panel section I need (behind the wheel), just the section in front of it. |

I have contacted American Muscle Car a couple of times now. Each time they tell me they are going to reproduce them soon. So...I'm waiting...
I know it's expensive, but I think we could order the fastback quarter panel and cut what we need from it. I still have time because there are thousand other things to fix on my car. If by some chance you do find them PLEASE let me know!!!!!

Have you tried this place?
They show they make their own, no idea on lead times, quality, etc., but may be worth a shot if other sources are dried up. ![]() here's another one to try; again no idea on the place, just doing some surfin' Edited by schufitz - 09-February-2025 at 4:57AM |

I wish I could tell you that they were all compatible.....But I am just guessing. When I absolutely need that quarter panel and these guys don't come through, I will try to modify either the 4 door (which is cheaper) or bite bullet and purchase the fastback quarter. Until then my trunk area and floorboards need a lot of work
As it is my car will not be a concourse restoration. I have already had to replace the factory frame connector behind the rocker panel (which I think are unique to the convertible) with 3x3 square tubing. It's strong but not original. Good luck ...Keep me posted if you find a solution

Just a thought, But, if you know someone with a fastback or four door some careful measurements should answer the question. I just don't know of any in my area

I don't mean to run but, I have notice that the verbiage and the part numbers don't match up on the Classic Sheet Metal page. Be sure to look at the diagram part number not what they name it

I tried these guys recently already asking about RFP-102 and they said they don't have any in stock. They didn't elaborate or mention any plans as to when they might come back in stock so I take that as a no.

That's a solution I hadn't thought of but sounds way to expensive for me. My car had an old fiberglass repair that was there for at least a few decades which I just removed to expose the missing metal. I have been watching some metal fabrication videos on-line and although it looks difficult I'd give that a try before I spend a thousand bucks on a fastback panel to cut a small section out of it. You can only see one side at a time so if I could make it look close enough that'd be fine with me. If it was a super rare formal roof cobra or something that'd be another story but I think there are options. Both of my fenders have rust in the same spot on each side and they don't appear to be making patch panels for the 68-69 fenders either..

I can understand that the price is crazy, and I won't do it unless I have no other choice. I am still waiting to see if A.M.C. comes through. I don't feel as though I have the tin knocking skill to reproduce the metal I need. So, I wait.....

I hope they come through also. I'd like to get an opinion and price from somebody with the welding and fabricating skills so see what it'd take and if that's an option. Depending on what I learn that might mean waiting and hoping for the reproduction parts or getting ready for a possible road trip to find some outside the rust belt.
In an extreme worst case scenario I'll try it myself with some similar gauge sheet metal like I said or prep and rust proof the metal and try a new fiberglass repair so I can keep the project moving and kick the can down the road until parts become available. That'd be far from ideal but the fiberglass patch that it had was there from well before I bought the car 20 years ago and it wasn't noticeable until I removed all the trim...

On the "how-to" section, I posted a thread about a company I recently used that does custom sheet metal (and other materials) cuts & bends. You send them a CAD design and they use their laser cutter and send your part back. You can also specify bends on your drawing and if there is a certain type of metal or coating you'd like. Sendcutsend I found them when I was restoring a 1970's pinball machine, several of the restorations are using this company to make the metal backing on the back glass which is no longer produced. I don't know their size limits, but if you are only looking for small areas, it might be something to consider. Thanks, -Chris |

Wow never considered a company like send cut. I am afraid they would be very expensive for a one off part.
As far as AMD, I just called up the web site and it seems they only have the fastback quarters. I will keep looking. Maybe someone somewhere has it on their shelf
