Posting for reference,2012 Mustang 19" Performance Pack wheels on the back of the Torino. I'm using these wheels just to move my Torino around in the garage. There is about a 1/4 of clearance between the wheel and frame rail. This would not be a great choice for a daily.

All of the Gran Torino models share the same rear wheel wells, and suspension parts. So anything others have installed onto their 1972-79 models, should work for you too.

No, realistically with a 255, you'll be fine. I have fit 295/50R15, 255/50R17 on the front with no issues on stock suspension. Main thing, with a 255/60R15, stick with an 8" wheel. 7.5" wide might be ok, but look at the tire specs to make sure.

My personal preference for a long time was 255/60R15 front and 295/50R15 rear. Another popular size is the 275/60R15 for rear duty. Main thing, look at your tire specs. Make sure you are getting a decently rated load capacity when picking tires. Our cars are not 2900 pound fox bodies, so you want a tire with a decent rating. https://coopertire.com/en-us/find-tires/all-tires/cobra-radial-g-t Cooper has really kept the old 15" tire segment alive. Surprised to even see 14" tires still offered. Tire Size Service

15 105S 440 A C STD RWL 8 - 10 2061 With the specs on the Cooper, the 255/60's would be a good choice for the front end. 275's will give some rake, 295's are shorter, and will give that nice steamroller look. If you run a 8" mopar 15x8 wheel like we used to back in the day, you can fit 295/50r15's on all four corners and no rubbing concerns. I have also run Aero Racing 15" wheels that are wide...I mean WIDE wheels and they really fill the well but were over 11" wide. Fun fact...BFG had a 305/50R15 radial that was used on Pantera cars and they also fit on our cars. ![]() |

Would be going with BFG Radial TA 255/60-15 on Magnum 500 7 inch rims with 4.25" backspacing on the front and 275/60-15 on Magnum 500 8 inch rims with 4.5" backspacing on the rear.

I like mags, or keystone classics, or torque thrust rims.
Those look great, Chris! I’m not a fan of kidney bean rims.

Greg, Thank you, I built a whole matrix of feedback from members on the forum, as well as put the Magnum 500's on with my Photo Shop software. The center emblems are: Supplier: Kentucky Mustang Item #: 14799 Description: Wheel Cap Magnum 500 Ford Crest Metal Cap 2 1/8" Center 5/8" Tall They have a separate web-site, but also list on their e-Bay store. They are solid and good quality. I've been very pleased with the rims/wheels/center emblem combination. Thanks, Chris

Well, they ended up not working out for my LTD. In 72 Ford used giant calipers and these wheels won't clear them. They would with a spacer, but I really don't want to run spacers. So, about $300 in return shipping for everything, I'm back to the drawing board

Went to a salvage yard to pull a wheel off an 88 Lincoln Town car. Took my Torino wheel to make sure the center bore and bolt pattern matched. It was Texas hot and I overlooked a small detail, it was a 15" wheel.
![]() So, still hunting for a spare wheel. Would this fit the 72 Gran Torino (disc brakes)"? Rim Diameter 14 Bolt Pattern 5x114.3 Offset 6 Backspacing 4.25 in Rim Width 7 I have no idea what is stock offset and backspace, https://tirewheelguide.com/sizes/ford/gran-torino/1972/ |

The center bore hasn't changed much in decades, but it is very close to 70.30mm as I recall. The 90's Lincolns with 16" wheels would be 7" wide and similar in offset to the older Fords up to the late 90's(when wider wheels(8" or more) pushed the offset a bit more towards 30mm).

Hey Everyone,
It's about time for me to do wheels n tires and wanted some input on backspacing and tire sizes.... I've always loved OleDutchD red 72's stance and wanted to do some thing similar. For my gold/brown 73...i think the Gray TTs would look great but needs to be the right fitment. Chrome would be rad...but it's seems a bit over the top for a "driver" status of my paint condition. Front 255/50-17 on 17x8 - There's 2 backspacing options 4.07in or 4.81? Rear I was hoping to go up to 295/45-18 on 18x10...backspacing 5.74 .....so expecting to run .75 spacer...on extended studs when I rebuild the 9in shortly. Couple questions: 1. Front I think the 4.07 front backspacing would be better clearance...but what would ya'll do? 2. Rear - Are there real concerns around a smaller spacer, on extended studs to fix wheel fitment? -Rather than spacer...what if i went down to a 275/50/17 on 17x8 or 17x9.5 with better fitment? Notes: 393C build is in the works so a full heart transplant is in the works...trying to do all the prep work I can...and will start a build thread too. Thanks in advance for your input! |

So, someone said 295/50/15 with 5 inch backspace. Never saw a picture. Can someone verify if will work with stock ride height? 70 torino

I have a 72 gt wagon. 295/70 r15 rear and 295/50 r15 front mounted on classic cragars with 5" offset. Looks great. Friend has 305's and I am pretty sure I could have done same. Will try to figure out how to post a picture.

Hi Matt, I'm planning to use that same Impala SS tire for the front of my 73. I have four 17x8" 98 Mustang GT wheels, the rear I'm shooting for the 275/50 tire. I think the 8" wheels need to be at least 4" back spaced, which is near zero offset. I'd try that 4.81" back spacing wheel first, less might put it too far inboard. The rear has a little more space inboard, a wider wheel like 10" might need to be near the 5" back spacing.

Apologies if this has been covered already however I cannot find it here. 1973 Gran Torino Sport. Need direction on the widest matching tire size that will fit on all four corners for stock 14 inch Magnum 500 Rally wheels without rubbing. Stock height, not lowered, not jacked, not cut. Need same for 15 inch Magnum Rally wheels (aftermarket) as well. Thanks. Steve in SD

Steve, best bet is to check Coker’s website. They reproduce a lot of the wide 14” tires. Realistically, guessing a 255 series tire but it’ll depend on the wheel width.
I forget the old tire classifications but I want to say a G60 or 60 series width. Modern sizes would likely be a 255/60R14? |

As far as 15” wheels are concerned, usually a 15x8.5 wheel will be fine. 255/60R15 front and if you want a staggered look, 275-60R15 rear.
My personal preference is old school for 15” wheels, using a 15x9” wheel with 295/50R15’s. I will tell you however 17” wheels with a 255/50R17 front and 275/50R17 rear works well as well, and still has plenty of sidewall to ride comfortable while still allowing you to have wider rubber to have fun with. I’m running 18” wheels currently, 235/45/18 front, and 295/45r18 rear. I don’t care for the 235, too narrow for my liking but I’m going to run the tires until next spring up front. If you want even all around, 255/60R15 are a good fit on all four corners. Also, if dead set on magnum wheels, is suggest you consider the aluminum versions over the chrome steel. Guys have had issues with a couple suppliers and runout and balancing of the steel reproduction magnum wheels is not that good so make sure before mounting and balancing the tires, check your wheels first to make sure no issues.

I agree with all of that Andrew, and isn't the wheel issue the lugnut hole centering of the steel wheels? I was fortunate I believe with my 15x8" Magnum 500's from the Wheel Vintiques 54 Series. But the tire guys did have trouble getting each wheel to spin true for balancing. They have to use an odd adapter to mount those wheels onto the balancing machine, it's not a secure centering device/process. I would much prefer any wheel that is made hub centric, the wheel is centered completely by the center hole, not by the lugnut holes. The lugnut holes should be located perfectly centered around the hub hole, but the old types for some reason didn't make the center hole perfectly centered, or strong enough to support the car weight. Funny are those sizes too that you mentioned. I have those 15's mounted, and OEM 17x8 wheels that I will mount 255/50 and 275/50 tires onto eventually. I hope the wheels will locate well on a later Town Car chassis and fit the wheel wells.
