Hi, name is Doug Childress and I joined a few days ago. I started building Fords (and Mercurys) while in high school back in the late 70s, primarily Mustangs and Cougars. I have built everything from basic, and not-so-basic, 289s to very strong 351Cs to stroked 429SCJs. I have wanted a '72 Sport since about 1976, when I fell in love with one driven by an upperclassman at my high school. I did find one about 35 years ago (a rough gold/ginger, bench seat 302/C4 car), but never got started on it due to injuries incurred from a run-in with a drunk driver that left me unable to work on anything for some time. That car was sold and then about ten years later a new search began. I had given up, and purchased a '73 Montego GT (green on green bucket seat, console, rallye, 351CJ/C6/3.50 car) as a consolation project. Not my number one choice--and also pretty rusty in the rear quarters--but at least rarity helped overcome the lack of Sport beauty. Then, a few weeks ago, I got a call out of the blue from a guy a friend of a friend had given my number to. He was selling a '72 Sport for a friend of his who was moving out of state and could not take with him. Definitely not pristine, but no rust and complete minus engine/trans. It is a Medium Yellow, Laser stripe, Ginger Sport Cloth Bench, 351-2V/C4/2.75 car. I could not pass it up, even though the price was a bit higher than I would have liked to spend. I bit the bullet as it is becoming very hard to find any fastback Sports, let alone rust-free examples, in my area (or any area, for that matter...). I plan to keep the yellow/laser stripe/ginger scheme (though may go from bench to buckets as I have a set), but to upgrade the chassis and drivetrain with springs, large front/rear sway bars, and a well built 351C (using many Boss and aftermarket parts I have accumulated over the years) and a CJ C6 with factory high stall convertor I had tucked away for the Montego. Should be a fun, relatively easy project. Will try to keep things updated here once i have photo-posting privileges I'm sure i will need some questions answered, some parts sources, and some ideas exchanged during the process. Glad this forum exists. Torinos are not as simple as Mustangs to find parts, information, and build topics on.
