goodmorning ladies an gents, my grandfather is giving me a 1970 Ford Torino Cobra 2 door sports roof had the 429 engine in it. It’s currently just a rolling chasis. I plan on building it over the next few years and not going the traditional way with it. I’m sure I’ll get a lot of hate for it but I want to put a 1JZ-GTE engine in it and was just wondering if anyone has ever done it or attempted to do it. I planning on modernizing it putting in digital cluster, touch screen radio nice speakers some classic wheels made in to 18s. Any input is appreciated please no negative comments I understand it’s not the traditional build for one of these but I want to build it the way I want with no regards to resale or “restoring” it to its original condition.

I don't know of anyone putting a 1jz-gte or similar type engine in one of these Torinos. For modern engines, we've seen guys try to swap Coyotes, Modular V8s and even one guy did a Chevy LS engine. You will likely be a trailblazer for this kind of swap.

Hey nothing wrong with being different.... i know those engines are capable of big HP, but what about Torque for such a heavy car??

I like an old looking engine under the hood of a classic old car. But I love the new technology in engines today, the 3.7 dual DI is on my list to try a swap into my 4500lbs spare 98 SUV. That's no classic, but heavy and the two stock engines aren't very fuel efficient or powerful. That newer 3.7 weighs about 200lbs complete, and most of the trucks they put it in get 25-30mpg. The turbo engines are attractive, but who knows how long they will last.

If it were me, I might consider a 2.3 EcoBoost. The wife's 2020 Explorer has one, and it's hard to stick to speed limits. They use it in the Ranger, too, with a 7,500-lb tow capacity, so it can deal with some weight. It's been available in the Mustang long enough that it shouldn't be too hard to find in a junkyard.

Avoid the sideways Ford engines, most of those latest ones have an internal water pump. That is the stupidest thing I've heard of in decades from a manufacturer. When the WP fails, the engine fails soon after that.

1jz is definitely different…interested to see how it turns out….definitely need some custom mounts at the least…someone has to be first…
Had a couple of cars with the 2jz gte in them and they’re wicked….only thing that matters is that you’re into it…doesn’t matter what others think about your car… |

Ditto, build it the way you want to, many others will enjoy your progress.
