What brands to people recommend, and what are the part numbers of those brands, for oil filters for my '77 Cougar with the 302? I don't think I need anything really super expensive or fancy - it is an ancient, bullet-proof 302, after all!

I'd heard that the NAPA Gold series were very good; any experience with those?

No Fram. I'd flush out an old filter before using Fram, and I'm not kidding.

Mobil 1, Motorcraft, STP, Wix, are all good pieces.

For your car I'd get the typical FL-1A and be done with it.

I've used them as well.

I have not had any issues related to filters in all my years.

Fram is available everywhere, with the Black Grip painting stuff on it... makes it easy to turn on and off by hand without slippage or using a filter wrench.
I think they are the Fram Extra Guard filters.

Napa Gold are a Wix filter. That is what I use exclusively, except on the Honda for which I use Honda filters (usually I get the Japanese ones which are probably the best).

Wix has been a quality leader in filters for many years.

An old and very unofficial study, but it is good to show how much difference there really is in oil filters from brand to brand.

I have a FRAM filter in my trunk. I would never drive with it on though...intend to use it for an engine flush experiment shortly. Gonna run her nice 'n' hot, bring it home, drain the oil overnight, slap the FRAM on there, put a couple quarts of VR1 50-weight and a couple quarts of diesel in it, idle it for about ten minutes, then let THAT mess drain overnight. Then I'll put in 15W40 and the FL-1A I have sitting on my desk. Might get rid of some crud.

I ended up just getting a Motomaster filter (Canadian Tire brand). The car hardly gets any mileage put on it a year anyway, and I have a feeling the motor is beyond what a good filter could do to save it LOL! Nah, she's a good motor, just tired and gutless. The previous owners of my car were not very nice to it, and the oil in it when I got it was black. The oil that I drained out of it this time, after 2000 miles, was gross, too - worse than the 8000 mile oil from my Pontiac G8, and kind of smelled like gasoline.  Yummy! I'll be interested to see how my new oil fares come next driving season.

Interesting study! I'm surprised they'd recommend silicone seals, though: silicone has poor mechanical strength for a dynamic seal, and it is not compatible with petroleum products like nitrile is.

Don't think so; why would that make the oil smell like gas? Can the pump cause gas to leak into the crankcase?

Yup.

Diaphragms break all the time in mech pumps causing fuel to leak into the crankcase.

Wow, I didn't know there was any connection between the crankcase and the mechanical pump. I'd never really stopped to think about it because I've never serviced a fuel pump. Huh. Could poor fuel delivery be responsible for my sluggish performance, too (or is that just a consequence of having a 360 hp daily driver LOL)?

Turbo301, This is my Cougar with a stock 351W and 3.5:1 rear gears. your 302 should be a bit slower than this.

Unless your engine is very slugged up, I would not recommend trying to flush it. In the eighties a customer had me add a quart of motor flush to his engine (followed directions on the can) before changing his oil. He later told me his engine failed within a month. Also today's oils do not contain zinc, a necessary additive for flat tappet (lifter) cams. I would recommend an additive with ZDDP (zinc) at every oil change!

Did Fram actually pay for a new engine due to a filter failure? I'd love to hear about that! I would have thought they'd do whatever it took to get out of such a warranty claim!

That is the first time I've ever heard of a flimsy warranty actually paying up on a real claim! That is very cool. I'm sure nowadays the warranty sharks are even better.

That's why most times, I ignore warranties. It seems like things not worth trying to cash in on because of all the red tape they purposely put in.

I always buy the best parts (that have the best warranties), but figure I'm paying for a quality part, not a warranty that will actually do something for me in years ahead.
